STARTREK VOYAGER --------CARDASSIAN

Chapter 57

Once inside they both went to their desks. As Kathryn sat down she laughed. “I see Evans divided the number of reports equally between us…. Half on my desk, half on yours. And…. I see the padds are neatly stacked. As he placed them, I’m sure he was enjoying himself. I guess having two captains does call for some ingenuity on the part of the crew.”
Picking up the top padd, turning on his monitor, Chakotay smiled over at his co-captain. “If this was all we had to worry about, we’d be lucky.”
Reaching for one of the padds, Janeway changed her mind, instead she rose to her feet. “I need another coffee before I attack my portion of the work load. What about you?”
Shaking his head Chakotay looked at her. “No thanks. You and your coffee, it’s becoming legend on Voyager.”
Starting for the upper level, she threw a reply over her shoulder. Well…. There are worse things to be known for!”
Rolling his eyes, Chakotay returned to his monitor.
Back at her desk, Kathryn began reviewing the reports. For some time the captains worked away silently, exchanging the padds as they finished with each one. About twenty minutes into their day, the buzzer sounded. Without raising her head Kathryn responded. “Enter.”
Chakotay smiled, Kathryn Janeway was certainly feeling more at ease than before. Something, about the away mission, had definitely affected her sense of belonging on Voyager.
When the door opened, Seska walked in. Not knowing what to expect she was slightly uneasy. “I hope I’m not disturbing you?’
After taking a sip out of the cup already at her lips, Kathryn gestured. “No, of course not. Come in. How is Kayon this morning?”
Seska laughed. “I don’t know how he managed to recover so quickly, the advantages of youth. He woke up before either Oyal or myself, found his way to the mess hall, where he helped Neelix. We never heard him get up, fix the couch or move around the room. Evidently, when he left our quarters, he ran into one of the crew and asked where he could find the Talaxian.”
Leaning back, Chakotay studied the Cardassian. Since revealing her identity, Seska had showed slight apprehensive whenever she was in his presence, today was no different. But then, the fate of her family lay in his hands. It was very minute, only due to Seska being part of his crew for so long, could Chakotay detect it. “Well, that’s good. Evidently, he’s eager, not afraid of work. I’m sure we can find suitable assignments to keep the young man occupied.”
Seska glanced over at Janeway, before returning her attention to Chakotay. “When it’s convenient, Oyal is very eager to meet with you.”
Running his hand along the arm of his chair, Chakotay responded. “Needless to say we are also anxious for the meeting. Anytime would be fine, neither Captain Janeway or myself have anything planned for today.”
Eager to have the meeting between the command team and her husband over with, Seska started to turn away. Would this be her last time reporting for duty as Lieutenant Seska of the Maquis ship Voyager? “I’ll let Oyal know.”
Sitting back, enjoying her coffee, Janeway had been closely watching the Cardassian. She also recognized the apprehensive within Seska. “Seska….. Chakotay and I have placed a letter of merit in your file. Down on the planet your support did not go unnoticed. It was appreciated, your silent encouragement helped during the hassle with the Maje. Thank you.”
Turning back to the command team, the shock registered on Seska’s face. For several seconds, she did not know how to respond. Never once in all her years of following Cardassian orders, had she ever received a citation such as this. Now she was being honoured by these two humans. “I had a selfish motive for wanting the success of the mission.”
Kathryn smiled. “Yes Seska you did. However, working to fulfil a mission and lending extra support to a colleague, are two different things.”
Still at a loss for words Seska nodded. “I am the one to say thank you. If it had not been for you and Chakotay, my husband and son would be lost to me.”
Watching the Cardassian, Janeway hoped someday they would be friends. “I’m glad we succeeded.”
Chakotay’s voice was low as he spoke. “Seska, I have the feeling everything will be okay. We were impressed with Evek, your son appears to be a young man to be proud of, if the others settle in as these two….. Besides, I wouldn’t want to be the one, to place Oyal in a position of earning your displeasure.”
Placing her hand on the back of one of the chairs, Seska regarded the command team. “I hope so. Kayon certainly is settling in. Some of the crew showed surprise at Neelix’s helper, however, apparently there was no hostility. Being a handful of Cardassians onboard a Maquis ship, is not something any of us were prepared for.”
Tapping her finger on the cup, Janeway smiled. “Neither were we. Sometimes children can be the best ambassadors.”
Smiling Seska nodded. ”Yes, sometimes they are. I’ll contact Oyal, tell him you’re waiting for him.”
With nothing more to say, Seska left the ready room. Entering the bridge, she hesitated for a fraction of a second. For the first time since setting foot on Voyager, Seska realized she was beginning to feel a contentment, a sense of being settled, never before experienced. No longer was she a Cardassian spy, forced to betray others, never to have friends, comrades. Instead she was a Maquis officer, accepted by her captains, slowly regaining the trust of her crewmates. Would this continue?
Walking over to her station in the operations section, Seska looked around at the various consoles. Accustomed to Lieutenant Seska being on the bridge, no one paid much attention to her. The face may have changed, however, she was still their crewmate. Over the past couple of weeks they had started to to be okay with this. If their captains accepted Seska, the crew trusted the judgement of their command team.
Reaching her destination, after nodding a good morning, she took her station between Rollins and Ayala. Seska tapped her commbadge, this time it did not matter if she was overheard talking to her husband. The full impact of being free of Cardassia registered. No longer would she have to arrange secret rendezvous to be with her family. No longer would she and Oyal be looking over their shoulder to see who was watching. Seska took a deep breath, she was free to be who she was, the same could be said for Oyal and Kayon. “Seska to Oyal, the captains are waiting to meet with you.”

Chapter 58

After Seska left, Chakotay turned his chair to face Janeway. “I think Seska was surprised about the letter of merit. I’m glad you told me what happened. Her actions do not support the information Evans and Ro gathered. Perhaps for Cardassia, she had to be a hardened, treacherous undercover agent, however, turning against her government, Oyal forming a resistance group, do not hold up to their reputations. I do know Cardassian children must follow the path chosen by their parents or frequently by the government, failure is not an option. After what happened to her mother Seska, would have been watched very closely, by both her father and central command. She had to succeed or face execution as a traitor…… The same fate as her mother.”
Kathryn played with a padd on her desk. “Life on Cardassia cannot be very pleasant. After hearing Seska’s story, I would never be able to live under a dictatorship such as the Cardassian government, or the Founders. Incidentally, did you know Seska is a Legate, the same as Oyal.”
Chakotay shook his head. “No! I knew she was high up, however, not a Legate. We have two very powerful Cardassians onboard. It will be interesting to see exactly what type of person Seska and Oyal really are, now they no longer have to fear reprisals from Cardassia. I have a feeling Seska’s actions on the planet, were those of the real person. However, speaking of Oyal, are you nervous about being recognized?”
Trying to put her feelings into words, for a moment Kathryn studied the desk. Finally she shook her head. “No…… In fact I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve finally come to terms with what happened. It’s time for both Oyal and myself to face the past. Voyager is a small ship, we will be seeing each other every day. Only by having this out in the open, will we be able to avoid discomfort.”
Chakotay looked over at his former enemy. “Like you and I. We did not meet under the best of circumstances. Only by openly acknowledging, talking about Syzygy, even joking about it, can we be at ease with each other.”
Kathryn gestured with her hand. “Yes, this also applied to Tuvok. I’ve heard comments about his spying days. It’s out in the open, not something dark and sinister, which must be hidden, everyone afraid to mention it. Just the opposite, it has become a joke on Voyager. The same as when I captured the Maquis leader.”
Looking as his amused co-captain, an embarrassed Chakotay pulled the lobe of his ear. “Something…… I’ll never live down.”
Throwing Chakotay another laughter fulled glance, Kathryn returned to reading the reports. Chuckling softly, Chakotay turned back to his monitor. A few minutes later the buzzer rang. Knowing who it would be the captains exchanged a quick glance. Pushing her chair a few inches from the desk Janeway leaned back. Crossing her legs, she held the coffee cup in her lap as Chakotay replied to the summons. “Enter!”
As Legate Oyal entered, Chakotay rose to his feet. Remaining in her chair, Kathryn looked down into her cup, momentarily hiding her face. Walking slowly toward the desks, Oyal’s keen eyes rested on Janeway. When he was halfway inside the room, she raised her head.
Oyal stopped! For a split second time moved backwards. Then with a small smile, he bent his head in acknowledgement. “So…. Once again the fighting ensign and I meet.”
Janeway could not help smiling at the wording. “Should I apologize?”
The eyes of the Cardassian did not waver from the face, he had not seen in over twenty years, nor had he ever expected to see again. “I’d be disappointed if you did. It is I who should ask your forgiveness.”
Rubbing her hand up and down the cup, Janeway shook her head. “No, Legate Oyal. Back then we were young, new to our duties, did what was ordered by our commanders. Carrying out our assignments to the best of our abilities or face sanctions. Our first meeting was a long time ago, I think it is best to leave it there, in the past where it belongs. I now believe there was more to the mission. Our shuttle was not a victim of a system failure, nothing was ever disclosed to me, of course, I never asked.”
Smiling with both amusement and respect, Oyal took a deep breath as the past was laid to rest. “I’ll be sure to mention this….. If I ever meet those who were in command at the time.”
He turned his head. “Captain Chakotay, if courage alone will bring this ship to the Alpha Quadrant, then you have enough in your co-captain to make the trip several times over.”
Chakotay smiled at Janeway. “I totally agree Legate Oyal….. I am well aware of her courage. I consider myself fortunate to have Kathryn Janeway as my co-captain….. And as a friend.”
Speaking with both deep regard plus a touch of amusement, Oyal glanced over at Janeway. “I would not advise having her as an enemy!”
The former Maquis leader uttered a soft chuckle. “This I can attest to, she can be very devious and dangerous when necessary. Both of us have learned a lesson about staying on the good side of Kathryn Janeway.”
The subject of the conversation graced both men with a very innocent smile.
Chakotay held out his hand. “Legate Oyal, finally we meet….. Officially. I have been looking forward to meeting with the leader of the Cardassian resistance.”
Taking a couple of steps forward, the Cardassian Legate accepted the offered hand. “Captain Chakotay, as I have been looking forward to meeting the Maquis leader. However….. I didn’t expect such circumstances.”
Pointing to one of the chairs, Chakotay sat down. “Neither did I, please have a seat. How are the others this morning?”
Accepting the offer, Oyal angled the chair so he could see both captains. “Everything happened so fast, they’re slightly stunned. Though they are starting to realize life with the Kazon is over, they have expressed concern about being on a Maquis ship……Not knowing the feelings of your crew, they are slightly fearful of leaving their quarters.”
Moving her chair closer to the desk, Janeway placed her arms on the hard surface. “Yes…. I can relate to this, however, they have nothing to fear. Before undertaking this rescue, we spoke with all the crew. Both Chakotay and I had long, private conversations with those who carry, or could carry, a strong dislike of Cardassians. Any Cardassian bent on conquest, bent on destroying the Federation, with no respect for others, would never be welcomed on Voyager, nor would we ever extend a helping hand. However, any Cardassian who wants peace, and is willing to co-exist with other species will always be welcome.”
Hesitating a moment, she leaned back in her chair. “Voyager has somewhat of an unusual crew. They are far more tolerant than most.”
For a moment sadness crossed her face. “A tolerance which evolved through the consequences of hatred. Most of us now realize, we know only one side of Cardassians, as they know little about us. Though it is not an easy thing to do, this crew is willing to reserve judgement. We all learned a valuable lesson through events which occurred onboard my ship. Chakotay and I have stress one very important fact. You are resistance fighters, working toward the same goal as the Maquis and…… As with the Maquis, are outlawed and hunted by their government. Once the initial introductions are over, with duties assigned to everyone, they won’t feel so out of place. Once they begin mingling with the crew, they should feel more comfortable.”
For a moment Oyal looked down at the deck. “Though I am concerned for all the Cardassians, it is Kayon I’m most worried about. It’s no secret I was Dukat’s superior on Bajor. If there are any Bajorians, who were in the labor camps, or had family confined there, I’m concerned they will take their dislike of myself out on my son.”
The Legate was surprised to hear a soft chuckle from Janeway and see a smile on Chakotay’s face. Looking from one to the other, Oyal could sense something unexpected was about to occur.
Chakotay shifted in his seat. “Ah yes….. Bajor. There are members of Voyager’s crew who grew up in the camps. However….. Perhaps, you remember the mysterious escape of captured Bajorian resistance fighters, from what we now call DS-9.”
Oyal took a deep breath, he had a good idea of what Chakotay was leading up to. Until now only Dukat, Seska and the escapees were aware of his involvement. He knew somehow this had changed.
Closely watching Oyal, Janeway continued the explanation. “Two of those fighters, Ture Jarlin and Oedoxf Ery, are members of our crew. We  spoke with them. Knowing you were now beyond the reach of Cardassia, both had a lot to say about the actions of yourself and Gul Dukat on Bajor. Including secret messages sent to the resistance via Tora Naprem. They admitted not only were you involved in their escape, but had been in fact the mastermind behind it. A secret they kept all these years. They insisted on being part of yesterday’s away team, remaining at the back out of sight, wanting to wait until a more appropriate moment to renew acquaintances.”
Amused by the expression on Oyal’s face Chakotay studied the Legate. “These Bajorian fighters owe their lives to you! The Cardassian Legate in charge of the occupational forces. So…. Do not worry about your son. It will not be long, before the crew of Voyager learn about the secret actions of Legate Oyal on Bajor.”
Also amused by the resigned look on Oyal’s face, the expression of a hero wishing to remain anonymous, Kathryn decided to torture him further. “Oh….. By the way…. Jarlin and Ery are extremely anxious to meet with you. They never had the opportunity of saying a proper thank you.”
Oyal shook his head. “I knew it would be dangerous coming onboard Voyager. My wife left out this little fact.”
Janeway laughed. “Legate Oyal, you will discover one’s past has a way of catching up at the most unexpected of moments. This appears to be especially true on Voyager.”
Slightly embarrassed and amused, Oyal could only resign himself to the inevitable. Shortly, everyone on Voyager would be aware of his past actions. “So I see. It appears there is no end to the surprises, you and Captain Chakotay are capable of throwing at someone. In previous instances, I have found when the past catches up….. It is generally unpleasant. Somehow, the command team of Voyager has managed to change this. Well…. This does ease my concern for Kayon, I do look forward to meeting with Jarlin and Ery under pleasant circumstances, we have a lot of catching up to do. However, my son is not my only concern. Unfortunately, none of the Cardassians, including myself and Evek have any starship experience. I don’t know what duties we would be ready for.”
Chakotay ran his hand along his chin. “This is something Kathryn and I are not concerned about. From what we saw, Evek could be assigned to security, at least in the beginning, Tuvok concurs. I suggest you sit down with Evans and Tuvok, discuss what you know about each one, what they did on Cardassia. Work from there, if necessary we’ll provide training. If one set of duties do not work out, we’ll change them until each member of your party is comfortable.”
After placing her empty cup on the desk, Janeway leaned back in her chair. “I can assure you….. Evans and Tuvok are experts at fitting people in, they can be very creative when necessary. However, from what Seska mentioned, I understand one member is already finding his way around. I’m glad Kayon did not suffered any adverse affects from our little outing.”
Oyal laughed. “He is resourceful. Because of the dangers Seska and I faced, we tried to install in the Kayon the ability to look after himself. For the most part children and family are extremely important, however, this was not the case with Legate Omar, Seska’s father. Are you aware of her story?”
Janeway nodded. “Yes, we are of some of the story…. The part concerning her mother.… Needless to say we found it shocking.”
Trying to hide his anger towards his father-in-law, Oyal shifted in his seat. “After Seska’s mother….. Died….. Her father became even more domineering than before. Constantly, day-after-day, hour-after-hour, drilling his children about the glory of serving Cardassia. From this time, on both children, more so Seska, knew nothing other than military training, harsh discipline. She still bears a scar from a lashing she received at age twelve. Seska never had a decent childhood, however, unknowingly Omar helped her, probably saved her life. As soon as Seska was old enough to marry, which is fifteen, he searched for a satisfactory husband. Satisfactory, meaning in the service of Cardassia, someone who would ensure she never strayed from this course. His wife was now beyond reach, however, he could continue to punish her through Seska.”
Oyal took a deep breath, as a touch of sadness crossed his face. “I was ten years older, already a decorated hero with the appropriate credentials, in appearance the mirror image of Omar. So I became his choice, being well rewarded for accepting Seska. At first, I was going to refuse, being paid to take a wife did not appeal to me. However, at our first meeting, I noticed something in Seska which convinced me to change my mind. Captain Janeway, down on the planet, you mentioned seeing a spark of defiance in the eyes of the Cardassians.”
Janeway nodded. “Yes, it told me their spirits were unbroken.”
Memories of another time brought a gentle smile to Oyal’s face. “Well I noticed the same in Seska. Here was this fifteen-year-old, in her soldier-in-training uniform, snapping to attention before me. She knew why I was there, what her father was up to. Instead of quiet submission, I saw defiance in her posture and eyes. There was something about her which attracted me. Omar had not completely destroyed the small glimmer of her mother, which lay buried deep inside. I knew if I said no, Omar would search for another, probably finding someone just as cruel as he was. There were no shortage of soldiers on Cardassia. He did not know in my mind I was already questioning the Cardassian government,  I married Seska not because of the reward he gave me. For the first few years all went well. It took time, Seska eventually learned to trust me. Both of us moved up in the Cardassian ranks, decorated officers, to all appearances dedicated, loyal Cardassians. However, with each other we were questioning!”
As his mind drifted back, anger clearly showed in his voice and face. “Then Kayon was born. Omar was furious. Fearing our son would distract Seska from her duties, he first tried to end the pregnancy, then attempted to place him in an orphanage. Fortunately, due to my position, I was able to prevent Omar from doing so. However, he made sure Seska could never again have another child. It was at this point, he arranged to have her assigned to undercover work, effectively moving her off Cardassia for long periods of time, away from her family. Due to her being undercover, we had to meet in private, her name disappeared from all records, I could never acknowledge her as my wife, or even mention her name.”
He uttered a small bitter laugh. “Omar’s attitude achieved the opposite of what he wanted. He was already extremely powerful, becoming more so. This was really the turning point for both Seska and myself. Not long afterwards, I was posted to Bajor, which I’m certain was Omar’s doing.”
Oyal shrugged. “Perhaps he hoped I would be assassinated like my predecessor. Fortunately, this did not occur. Omar was unaware of the change of attitude Seska and myself held toward Cardassia. I believe he had become disillusioned with his son-in-law, because of Kayon. Despite the danger, I knew Kayon would not be safe within Omar’s grasp, so my son accompanied me. After the occupation, we returned to Cardassia, with Seska joining us within a couple of weeks. Nothing had changed. We only had a short time together before she was sent undercover with the Maquis. The rest you know….”
After Oyal finished, there was complete silence as the command team reflected on what they had just heard. Finally, Chakotay ran his had through his hair. “This explains a lot. We wondered why a Legate of your standing and a trained agent like Seska, would risk their lives by becoming resistance fighters. Now….. Kathryn and I understand.”
For a moment Oyal remained silent. “Some of the decision was personal, some…. Well…. For the people of Cardassia. You now understand what life is like. Everything is controlled by the government which is the military. There is no free-will. Seska and I were not allowed to encourage Kayon to do what he wanted, from the age of two, they began training him to be a soldier. Over the decades, thousands of people, both Cardassians and non-Cardassians, have suffered badly by our government’s constant desire for conquest. Any alliance with the Dominion, war with the Federation, will only bring addition hardship. Cardassia will survive only through peace, cooperation with the Federation and with non-Federation planets.”
Janeway rose to her feet. “I don’t know about you, I need coffee. Legate Oyal, would you care for something?”
A hint of mischief appeared in the eyes of the Cardassian. “No thank you, I had more than one cup of coffee this morning.”
He turned to Chakotay. “I congratulate you on excellent coffee. From what Seska once said I didn’t know what to expect, though she did say you recently acquired a coffee expert. However, I understand this came with a high price.”
The pleased look on Kathryn’s face was priceless. “Compared to what the Maquis had masquerading as coffee, anything would be an improvement. However, I do pride myself on good coffee.”
She sent a warning glance to Chakotay, who responded very carefully. Though, he could not resist the final few words. “The price of good coffee was high, however, well worth the price. I assure you…. Paying it was not too painful.”
Tossing her head, Janeway turned her back on the two laughing men, then quickly walked over to the replicator. “Oh, I forgot, Chakotay, would you like something?”
Knowing very well Janeway had not forgotten, Chakotay shook his head, as he attempted to control his laughter. “No thank you, fortunately only one of us is addicted to caffeine.”
Chakotay turned to Oyal. “Legate Oyal, I guarantee, paying the price is rather enjoyable.”
Kathryn returned to her desk. Sitting down she spoke very quietly. “Once back home, perhaps I will send you back to prison.”
Looking at Chakotay, Oyal managed to control his laughter. “Better stay on her good side, she does have leverage.”
Chakotay shifted in his seat. “I know!”
Looking as innocent as possible, Janeway turned to Chakotay. “If I had known how bad the Maquis coffee was, I would never have set the trap as Syzygy. I could have simply sent over a sample of my coffee, asking for a trade…. You in exchange for great coffee.”
Shaking his head Chakotay remained silent.
Leaning back with the fresh coffee, she waved her hand as she looked at Oyal. “See how ungrateful Chakotay can be. I went through weeks of difficult planning in order to capture him. What does he do….. Escapes after just four months in prison!”
Showing his amusement, Oyal turned to Chakotay. “Captain Chakotay…… I do believe you are in trouble.”
Chakotay replied with a straight face. “I was in trouble the day this woman was born!”
Neither Janeway or Oyal could prevent themselves from laughing. Nor did they try.
Deciding her co-captain had suffered enough, Kathryn turned to Oyal. “I’m glad we were able to reunite your family. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and Seska better, and learning more about Cardassia, especially the Cardassia of old.”
Oyal smiled at the former Starfleet ensign who was showing him the true meaning of forgiveness. “It will be a pleasure. We were once a civilized society, something I hope we will be able to again achieve.”
He turned to Chakotay. “Captain…. According to Seska you were able to discover her true identity fairly easily.”
Leaning forward Chakotay placed both arms on the desk. “Ro and Evans did have to do some digging, however, we knew within a couple of weeks.”
Gripping the arms of his chair, Oyal’s voice was harsh but low. Dangerously low. “I doubt you would have found the information, at least so quickly, had someone not wanted you to know.”
Janeway immediately realized what Oyal meant. “Omar!”
The Cardassian nodded. “Yes! Omar views the Maquis as outlaws, killers, therefore, he probably arranged for Chakotay to discover Seska was a Cardassian spy, hoping she would be murdered.”
Leaning back, Chakotay slapped the arm of his chair. “Damn!”
Oyal looked at the former Maquis leader. “However….. Omar’s plans certainly backfired. I look forward to the day, I will have the pleasure of informing him of such. I can not be certain, however, I am beginning to think he was suspicious of both Seska and myself. While we took every precaution, it is possible he was watching, not only all my movements, also those of the people around me. He may have been the one responsible for alerting Gul Sonnker, resulting in Talnir’s death.”
He turned to Janeway. “I know you and Evek had a long talk yesterday, did he tell you how he met Talnir?”
She shook her head. “No….. Only how she died.”
Memories of a better time brought a smile to Oyal’s face. “Talnir and her parents lived beside me on the home world, being close friends for many years. They are members of the resistance, who hopefully, are now safe on DS-9. When posted to Bajor, I needed someone to join me as a caregiver for Kayon. They were able to do so, living with me in the house assigned to the commander of occupational forces. Since Evek was in charge of my personal protection, he resided in a house next to mine. It required all of a week before the Evek and Talnir formed a relationship. Especially, when outside of the house, Kayon spent most of his time with Talnir or her parents. Most Bajorians assumed he was her son, for Kayon’s safety, we allowed the misconception, doing nothing to correct it.”
Moving her chair slightly sideways, Kathryn sat with one arm on her desk, the other holding her prized coffee. “When I think of the very close relationship I have with my father, it’s difficult to understand a man such as Omar. It’s a sad fact of life, the people, who we should be able to count on, can sometimes be the most dangerous. I’m sure Seska told you the whole story concerning Chakotay and myself.”
Laughter clearly showed as he looked from Janeway to Chakotay. “Yes! I was extremely amused about Syzygy, then the two of you ending up commanding the same ship. It certainly makes for a good story. Now I understand some of the comments made yesterday.”
His expression sobered. “However, what happened with this Cavit and Fitzgerald, was certainly not amusing. You both are fortunate to have such a loyal crew. Yesterday, Seska mentioned she enjoys being part of Voyager’s crew. I have never heard my wife make a comment such as this. Now I understand why.”
Thoughtfully, Chakotay ran a hand along the arm of his chair. “I’m glad to hear this, Kathryn spoke very highly of Seska’s actions during the away mission. We have always been able to depend on her, several times she assumed command during emergency situations. When necessary we never hesitated to give Seska the bridge. It might sound strange, considering who she was, however, we knew she had the training, expertise. Once we realized she was betraying Cardassia, not the Maquis, instinct told me she could be trusted.”
Moving closer to the desk, Chakotay studied the Cardassian. “We hope you will also feel at home on Voyager, we have diverse, rather interesting crew. However, I’m afraid we have no posting for a Legate, we’re hoping you will not consider this a demotion….. Will you accept the rank, position of commander?
Oyal showed no hesitation. “Absolutely! I consider it a privilege to be part of this crew in whatever capacity you see fit.”
His quick acceptance greatly pleased the command team, dispelling any remaining doubts they had concerning this Cardassian. Chakotay tapped the keys on his computer. “This area of space is extremely violent, plus we have no idea what may be ahead of us. The only certainty…. We will eventually encounter the Borg. Your talents, abilities are well known in analyzing situations, being able to see beyond the obvious. Something Tuvok excels at, the two you will work well together. Your skills at evaluating people will be extremely useful when making first contacts. Also, Evek made a very strong impression on us, we feel he’ll be a good assistant for Tuvok. Tuvok agreed with our assessment, he has more duties, responsibilities than under normal circumstances. Due to the situation, Kathryn and I have already adjusted some of the duties, routines on Voyager. We are prepared to make additional changes, if necessary.”
Gently swinging one leg Janeway laughed. “I can vouch for Commander Oyal’s abilities, he saw through my disguise.”
The captain’s immediate use of his new rank pleased Oyal. It was a mark of respect, It also sounded good. “It was not easy. Your doctor did a fine job.”
Janeway was delighted with the outcome of the meeting. “We would like you and Evek to work closely with Tuvok and Evans. They have more than their share of the work, where the security and day-to-day operation of Voyager is concerned. Also, Chakotay and I are in the process of installing special training programs. One of which will be martial arts, an area in which you are highly skilled. Would you be willing to train the crew?”
Oyal relaxed. Any unease concerning his future on Voyager quickly vanishing. The position he would now hold was one of, not only significance, it was one of trust. “Definitely Captain, however, Seska is far more skilled than I. If you don’t mind, I suggest having her work with me. I was sorry the Maje chose you instead of her.”
He smiled at Janeway. “However, my concerns were unfounded. You evidently did an excellent job of teaching this Kazon some manners.”
Oyal could not resist. “Something, you are very good at.”
Her eyes gleaming with mischief, Janeway shrugged. “Unfortunately, some like the Kazon will never learn, others…. Well are trainable. However, there are many ways to teach manners. From what I saw, you and Seska have your own methods of teaching respect. More than one of the Kazon had a very embarrassing meeting with their comrades.”
The new commander laughed. “Yes, I would have liked to listen in on their explanations. However, as far as some being trainable….. My wife would dispute this.”
Several times Oyal had displayed a sense of humor, something which had come as a surprise. Running a hand along his chin, this had brought home to Chakotay just how little was known about Cardassian culture. As far as he was concerned, Cardassians had killed his parents and were murdering the colonists. Before…… This was all he cared about….. Now he was facing a Cardassian who detested these killings and was capable of empathy toward another living species. “There is a small office beside the two occupied by Evans and Tuvok, it is now yours.”
Chakotay threw a quick glance at his co-captain, a signal for her to take up the conversation. “Yesterday, Evans mentioned the variety of different species we have onboard Voyager. Something both Chakotay and myself are well aware of. Some of which, have little or no real knowledge about their crewmate’s way of life. We want to find a way to correct this. Would you and Seska, or any of the others, be willing to share Cardassian history, culture with the crew?
Oyal smiled. “Definitely! Captain, may I make a suggestion? Once or twice a month, or more often if possible, Why don’t we have a cultural night. Whoever would like to, could present a bit of their way of life, culture, history, holidays, etc. Start off with very simple stories, those who wish to can build up their narrative overtime.”
Her eyes gleaming with pleasure, Janeway leaned forward, placing both arms on the desk. “Why Commander, what an excellent idea! I’m all for it. Those who want, can use the holodeck to create simple programs, enhancing their presentation. Over time this could really turn into something.”
Chakotay laughed. “Well, if the rest of the crew is as enthusiastic as you two…. Oyal, this will involve organization, management. Would you be willing to head this program?”
A delighted smile entered the expression of the Cardassian. “Definitely! I have always enjoyed learning about different species and sharing Cardassian history….. Before becoming a military society. I’ll start work as soon as I arrange duties with Evans and Tuvok for the others.”
Extremely please at this unexpected turn of events, Chakotay could not keep the amusement out of his voice. “Well, it would appear, we have found more than enough work to keep our new commander occupied.”
Janeway was also extremely delighted. “It certainly appears so. Not only do we have a new commander, we also have a new position on Voyager….. Chief of Cultural Affairs. Congratulation Commander Oyal.”
Oyal did not reply, there was no need to. His eyes revealed his feelings over the outcome of this meeting. The concerns of all three had completely disappeared. All had fallen into place in a natural and easy manner.
Chakotay laughed. “Perhaps, Command Oyal will want to return to the Kazon for a rest.”
Tilting her head to the side, Janeway decided a little mischief was in order. “We might have to apologize to Seska. After being apart for so long, I’m sure she would wish to spend as much time as possible with her husband…… Now with all his new duties…..”
Out of the corner of his eye, Oyal could see Chakotay trying not to laugh. The Cardassian managed to sound serious. “Rest assured, Captain Janeway, Seska and I are accustomed to great hardships. I’m sure the two of us will adapt.”
Janeway folded her hand in her lap. “This is good to know. I wouldn’t want any member of our crew to feel they had no…. Eh….. Social life.”
Looking at Oyal, Chakotay shrugged. “Must be a result of the brain injury.”
Janeway threw her co-captain the best glare she had ever produced. Then playing with her cup she returned to the serious. “This will certainly be good for all of us….. In several ways. Once you have decided on the basic set-up for the cultural program, let Chakotay and I know. We’ll call a staff meeting to obtain their insights, then implement the program.”
Shaking his head, Oyal was still amazed at how quickly these two could switch from being non-serious back to being serious. “If there is nothing else, I’ll start preparing the necessary information about the other Cardassians, and arrange a meeting with Evans and Tuvok for later today. The sooner everyone is settled the better.”
Chakotay nodded. “If there are any problems, large or small, tell us right away. The two of us do not distance ourselves from the crew, if anyone feels uncomfortable or threaten we want to know. Also, later this afternoon, Kathryn and I would like to meet with the group, formally welcome them on Voyager, plus answer any questions they might have. We may also have a private meeting with each one.”
Kathryn looked at Oyal. “It is easier to correct a problem before it gets out of hand. What about the two women, will they be all right?”
Oyal took a moment before answering. “I believe so. Having Susan around from the moment they came onboard has helped. Once they are formally settled in, able to relax, start to make a new life with new friends, hopefully, they will be able to put the events behind them. However….. They will always have to live with what happened. Susan has been a great comfort to them, going out of her way to ensure they were as comfortable as possible. Easing any concerns or fears they had. Captain Chakotay, I thank you for this extra consideration you have shown.”
Chakotay nodded. “If there is anything else we can do, let us know.”
Kathryn added. “Perhaps we can arrange for them to meet mostly with our female crew members at first. Let the two settle in, before meeting a lot of strange men.”
Oyal looked for one to the other. “You have already helped, every single one of us. Showing us a respect far beyond what others would have done. I can speak with Susan. Perhaps arrange for a few luncheon or coffee meet-ups to help with the transition.”
As Janeway official entered Oyal into the computer, reaching into his pocket he removed a computer chip. Reaching over he handed it to Chakotay. “This information came from a spy, I had on a Cardassian ship, operating in both the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants. Once translated, you will find it interesting. I only regret not being able to give this to you back home.”
Janeway immediately put two and two together. “The recorder you were carrying! This is the information from Talnir.”
Deep sadness clearly showed on Oyal’s face. “Yes! You will understand how important this would be in the right hands. Fortunately, I made a copy. Not knowing if I would be successful escaping Cardassia, I gave the other chip to Treac, the leader of the first group. He had orders to give it to Dukat. Talnir was a fine, caring young woman with her whole life ahead of her. The other agent, who was killed, was older, married with two young children. His wife was among those killed by the Caretaker, however, the children are under the care of the Cardassians now on DS-9. It will be a crime if they died for nothing.”
Janeway spoke gently. “Talnir’s death changed Evek, it set into motion a chain of events. I have always believed things happen for a reason. Often it is not the actual event, which has meaning, but what happens as a result.”
Quickly slipping the chip into his computer, Chakotay tapped a key, at the same time opening a communication link. “Tuvok, I just sent you some Cardassian information, let me know the minute it has been translated.”
Tuvok immediately responded. “In process now Captain.”
Rising to his feet Oyal managed to sound serious. “If there is nothing else, I have some work to do. The sooner I begin, the sooner I’ll have time to spend with my wife. I certainly don’t want to place Captain Janeway in the position of apologizing to Seska.”
Tilting her head Janeway laughed. The demon in her past had vanished into the past. She would always be grateful for undertaking the rescue of Seska’s husband.
After throwing an amused glance at his co-captain, Chakotay relaxed back in his seat.”Go ahead Commander, and welcome officially to Voyager. Don’t forget, Kathryn and I have an open door policy to every member of the crew. One last thing, I don’t know about Cardassian customs concerning those who died. You lost many friend and associates, as did the others. If there is some observance you wish to arrange, I’m sure we can accommodate you.”
For a moment Oyal thought over Chakotay’s offer. “We do have certain burial customs and formalities, which vary between the military and civilians. We never had an opportunity to hold any memorial while with the Kazon. There is a simple, ancient ceremony which might be fitting. I’ll discuss this with the others, let you know.”
The Cardassian commander smiled at the command team. “Again thank you. Thank you for having the courage to give those, who are supposed to be your enemies, an opportunity to prove otherwise.”
A quick, meaningful glance passed between the two captains, before Kathryn replied. “It appears Commander Oyal…. This is becoming a regular, successful part of Voyager.”
Understanding Janeway’s statement, Oyal nodded to the command team before turning, walking in the direction of the door. He had almost reached it when he stopped, looking back. “Oh by the way Captain Janeway, the doctor contacted me this morning, asking about the leg. He believes even after such a long period, with the medical equipment on Voyager, something can be done to correct the problem. He took me by surprise, I did not go into details when speaking with him yesterday.”
Looking innocent, Janeway glanced downwards before locking eyes with the Cardassian. “The doctor is very alert, he may have detected something on his medical tricorder. However, come to think of it….. I might have said something. After all…. Commander…. You are now a member of my crew. I need everyone in top shape, in case, we are forced to take another hike through the mountains.”
Amusement registering on his face, Oyal softly replied. “Of course…. Captain!”
For a second, Oyal regarded his new commander. Then he saluted Kathryn Janeway with a smile accompanied by nod of deep respect, before turning, walking through the door of the ready room. As he entered the bridge, Oyal forever left the Legate in the dust of a Kazon planet, as the Cardassian proudly assumed his duties of a Maquis commander onboard Voyager.

Chapter 59

Concerned about the meeting between the command team and her husband, Seska’s head jerked up as the ready room door slid open. Afraid to breath, her worried eyes followed Oyal as he crossed to the command section. Letting out the breath she had been holding, slowly her tensed body relaxed. Seska knew her husband well enough….. From the tilt of his head, easy step, the meeting had gone well.
Seska was not the only one who was watching. Every member of the bridge crew had a discreet eye trained on this Cardassian. The man, they had risked their lives to save. A man, once respected by his government, now the leader of the resistance, the husband of one of their shipmates. A man, with a reputation. However….. Someone, they knew little about. Someone, they were seeing for the first time.
Evans rose from the command chair. He was looking forward to meeting this mystery man. “Legate Oyal.”
Keeping his voice just loud enough, Oyal allowed his words to carry around the bridge. He was well aware of the scrutinizing eyes and the curiosity behind those eyes. “Commander Evans, it appears the Legate lost his way between the planet and Voyager. It is now commander.”
Seska was stunned, wondering even more what had occurred with the captains.
Smiling, Evans held out his hand. “Welcome aboard….. Commander!”
As he returned the warm handshake, Oyal found himself taking an immediate liking to this young man. “Thank you for showing Evek around, he enjoyed the tour, found the bridge fascinating.”
Evans carefully monitored Oyal’s reactions. “It was a pleasure. He exhibited keen interest and quickly absorbed all I said. I have no doubt Evek will be an asset to Voyager.”
Just as Evans was studying his words and movements, the Cardassian was also closely scrutinizing the Maquis commander. Oyal had little knowledge about the various crew members, something he intended to correct very quickly. However, he knew Evans had been Chakotay’s top intelligence agent and right-hand man, who now, along with Tuvok, was command-lieutenant to the command team. “I hope this will prove true of all the Cardassians. Among other things, I have been assigned the duty of helping you and Commander Tuvok with a variety of programs. Also, I have been given the small office beside the one you occupy.”
As what was becoming the norm on Voyager, Evans used a touch of mischief to ease the difficulties of first introductions. “Those offices are right behind the bridge, easily reached from the ready room, bridge, or by the smaller second bridge turbolift. If you require help learning the layout of Voyager, or any of our protocols, I’m sure Lieutenant Seska will be able to assist you.”
Oyal resisted the urge to look over at Seska, instead he kept his amused gaze on Evans. Something told him, between Janeway and Evans, he would never be allowed to forget his wife was also a member of the crew. “Well…. Commander Evans…. It appears Captains Janeway and Chakotay are not the only dangerous ones onboard Voyager. However…. It is a from of danger I welcome.”
Around the bridge more than one soft chuckle could be heard.
Evans was impressed. This Cardassian certainly intended to make friends. “It appears….. Commander….. I will have to add your name to the list of dangerous crew members. Something tells me, you are capable of holding your own with Captain Janeway.”
Oyal laughed, as his first day on a Maquis ship, was turning out the complete opposite of what had been expected. “With effort Commander, with effort. Regarding the other Cardassians, before meeting with you and Tuvok, it would be best I prepare as much information as possible. Would fourteen hundred be acceptable?”
Evans turned to the Vulcan. “It’s okay with me. Tuvok?”
Voyager’s security chief looked up. “Yes Commander Evans, it is acceptable to meet with Commander Oyal at fourteen hundred hours. Since Commander Oyal is familiar with the other Cardassians, it is logical for Commander Oyal to prepare a summary of their skills and abilities.”
Just about everyone rolled their eyes at Vulcan humor.
Grinning at Oyal, Evans commented. “I guess that settle that, fourteen hundred in your office.”
Oyal noticed the word commander was conspicuously left out.
Giving Evans a parting nod, Oyal walked over to his wife. He managed to make his voice sound serious and formal. “Lieutenant Seska, would you and our son join me for lunch in the mess hall at twelve hundred?”
Placing hands on hips, Seska tiled her head slightly to the side. She could feel the eyes of her crewmates as she responded, in her best ‘talking to a superior’ voice, while emphasizing his rank. “Of course Commander Oyal, I always obey a direct order. Is there anything else, Sir? Do I come as Lieutenant Seska or as your wife?”
No way could the bridge crew hide their amusement.
Then looking directly at her husband, Seska added, again stressing his rank. “Well Commander….. You appear to be settling in!”
Oyal laughed. “Why disrupt a proven advantage?’”
Glancing around the bridge, Oyal was amused at the intrigued faces closely watching the interaction between two Cardassians. Turning back to his wife he chose his words carefully. “On the bridge of Cardassians ships, as on many Starfleet vessels, the crews are not allowed any interchange, except solely regarding their duties. Captain Janeway and Captain Chakotay’s commands abilities are far superior to any I have ever seen, in space or on solid ground. The capabilities and loyalty of this crew far exceeds any I have knowledge of or have commanded myself. There are some, who would disagree, frown upon the actions of the command team, their manner of running a ship, however, those who would criticize, should take a very close look at their successes compared to those of Voyager’s.”
Standing just a couple of feet to the side, Rollins understood what Oyal was referring to. He had served on such a ship, where no one dared to speak to each other while on duty, even off-duty the crew carefully chatted only when behind closed doors. A by-the-book captain whose ship was full of unhappiness and tension. A crew who did their duties not out of loyalty or respect, as they did on Voyager. The exact opposite of Voyager.
Sitting in the command chair, Evans smiled to himself. Surprised and pleased at Oyal’s comments. In less than twenty-four hours of meeting the command team, coming onboard Voyager, Oyal had grasped the secret strength of the ship.
Smiling, Oyal looked at Seska. “Will my wife join me for lunch?”
Still standing hands on hips, Seska appeared very serious. “Yes Sir! Thank you for clarifying who would be joining you. Commander Oyal, especially as you are of higher rank, Lieutenant Seska will follow orders, however, your wife is a different matter…..”
This time no one concealed their amusement.
Oyal picked up the hint of a friendly threat. “I’ll be in my office, meet me there, then we can pick up Kayon, go to the mess hall together.”
Seska nodded. “I’ll be there…… As your wife. Where’s Kayon now.”
Laughing Oyal replied. “In quarters reading. Neelix translated some material for him about the Federation and the different members. I don’t believe it was recommended reading on Cardassia.”
Before turning away, Oyal answered the unspoken question in the eyes of his wife. “They are one in the same.”
Her breath caught in her throat. No one but Seska understood the meaning and impact behind those six words. Their commanding officer, Captain Kathryn Janeway, had been the young ensign terrified by her husband, so many years before. Desperately wanting a few minutes alone with Oyal, to find out exactly what had occurred behind the closed doors of the ready room, Seska knew for now she would have to wait.
Oyal turned to Mike Ayala. “Thanks for helping with Kayon yesterday. It was a long night for us, more so for our son.”
Mike glanced over at Seska, before turning his attention to Oyal. “I’m glad he suffered no ill affects. Earlier in the mess hall, Kayon came over thanking me for the lift.”
Sadness, longing appeared on Mike’s face. “He reminds me of my son.”
With a small understanding smile, Oyal responded sincerely. “I’m looking forward to meeting your boy when we return home…… And we will. It may take time, however, we will. This command team does not accept failure as an option.”
Still having difficulty accepting he and Seska were finally together, Oyal looked back at his wife. “I’ll see you later.”
Experiencing the same feelings as her husband Seska softly replied. “See you then.”
As Oyal talked with Seska and Ayala, Evans watched the expressions on the faces around him. Watching two Cardassians interacting on a personal level was certainly intriguing, giving them something to think about.
Throwing Evans one last parting nod, Oyal walked over to the turbolift, acknowledging Tuvok as he entered the lift. As the doors closed behind him, Oyal closed his eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. Hopefully, the rest of the crew, both Maquis and Cardassian would adjust as easily.

Chapter 60

Going directly to quarters, he found Kayon lounging in a chair. Completely engrossed in a padd, the boy didn’t even look up as his father entered. Quickly replicating a Maquis uniform, Oyal changed, then picking up the rank bar, slowly running a finger over the commander insignia. Smiling to himself, he admitted, being a Maquis commander meant more to him than being a Cardassian Legate. At least for now! Perhaps, sometime the the future, should conditions change on Cardassia, he would be proud to wear his old uniform. No! The old uniform represented the past. Something new would have to be designed.
In the process of attaching the bar to his collar, Oyal walked over to his son. “Kayon, we’ll be meeting your mother for lunch. Do you have enough reading material until then?”
The boy held up the padd. “I’m still studying the first padd, have three more. This was never taught to us on Cardassia, some of it is the opposite of what we learned. There is a lot more to the Federation and Starfleet.”
A small, sad smile appeared on Oyal’s face. Yes Kayon, there is much you have to learn about humans and the other species belonging to the Federation. Most of what you learned on Cardassia was….. Shall we say slightly incorrect.”
For a moment Kayon dropped his head, before looking back at his father. “Like Captain Chakotay. On Cardassia they call him an enemy.”
    Oyal nodded. “Like Captain Chakotay.”
Kayon’s young face filled with hope. “Will we be able to stay here on Voyager, the three of us together? I heard the other Cardassians talking, they’re uneasy around the Maquis.”
Watching the eager face of his son, Oyal felt pain over the years which had been lost. Kayon hardly knew his mother, this, the commander was determined to change. “For the foreseeable future, Voyager will be our home, we have nothing to fear, not on this ship. This afternoon, I’ll be meeting with Evans and Tuvok, begin the process of getting everyone settled. There will be a period of adjustment, however, everything will work out. Now, if you’ll be okay for the next couple of hours, as a new commander, I should begin my duties.”
Kayon looked intently at his father. “Is the position of commander important? The others said we would never be given ranks or stations which were significant.”
Oyal took a deep breath. “Only two others onboard Voyager carry the rank of commander. Not only are the duties vital to running a ship, it is a position of trust and responsibility. It is also the rank just below captain. So yes…. The rank of commander is very important.”
The young lad digested the information. Pride showed on his face. “I’m glad Captain Chakotay knows he can trust you.”
As his son summed up the events of the day, for the first time in years Oyal felt calmness seeping through his body. “So am I, so am I. Now you understand why we can stay on Voyager. And now….. You have a lot of reading to do, I have work to do. I’ll see you later.”
Oyal walked over to the door, as it slid open the Cardassian turned, for several seconds looking back at his son, a combination of sadness and hope burning in the eyes of the elder Cardassian. Sadness for the past, hope the future would bring the peace and happiness his family had never known. Perhaps, someday, even the freedom of Cardassia and tranquility for other families. Turning his eyes to the walls of Voyager, a small smile appeared on his face, realizing how well the ship had been named. Not only would the Cardassians be taking a voyage into a new life, so too would everybody onboard, doing so through mutual cooperation.
Walking over to the auxiliary bridge turbolift, quickly pressing the summons display on the wall. A moment later the doors silently slid open. “Deck One!”
Reaching his destination, Oyal stepped into a short hallway, positioned right behind the bridge. Along one wall stood four doors leading into the offices of Evans, Tuvok, the one which was now his, and one other, which he assumed was unoccupied. At the far end an entryway onto the bridge and sliding doors leading to the captain’s ready room.
He had no trouble locating his office, for there on the door stood a black plaque with white lettering, the same as for Evans and Tuvok, with the simple announcement - Commander Oyal. The speed in which this had been accomplished amazed the Cardassian. Obviously someone wanted him to feel at home. Once inside he took a quick look around. Walking over to the small replicator, obtaining the same Bajorian drink which Evek enjoyed, Oyal wasted no time.
Going over to the desk, he quickly placed the drink near the computer as his other hand opened the monitor. Carefully setting up new crew files on each of the Cardassians, he inputted the necessary history and pertinent information of each one, including a file for Kayon, where he entered the boy’s educational background. When only their ranks and stations were missing, he downloaded everything onto a couple of padds, one for Evans, one for Tuvok. Once fully completed, they would be turned over to the captains for final confirmation. Finished with his first duty, he began to study the schematics of Voyager and the crew listing.
He was hard at work when Seska walked in. Oyal looked up. “Is it twelve hundred already?’
Walking up to the desk, Seska placed both hands on her hips. “What did Janeway say? And nice door, nice office.”
Amused, he looked up at his wife. Knowing Seska was anxious for the answer to her question, Oyal replied to the latter comments. “Yes, the words Commander Oyal looks nice on the door. This office is bigger than the one I had on Cardassia, more comfortable. The small rectangular window adds a nice touch to the corner couch, chairs, coffee table. The operational display behind the desk, certainly provides all the information I should ever require. Once I place a few Cartesian mementoes here and there, I’ll have a comfortable working environment.
Still uncertain how the crew would regard their newest crewmates, Oyal’s last statement caused Seska some concern. “Do you think the command team will allow Cardassian items?”
Oyal laughed. “Why not? You are now talking to Voyager’s Chief of Cultural affairs, in charge of the program being designed to teach everyone about the different species on Voyager. Including Cardassians. I think a few artifacts from our past, before we became a military society, will be welcomed.”
Speechless, for a moment Seska glared at her husband. Even though she could not match the captain, Kathryn Janeway was not the only one with a death glare. Finally, overcoming her shock, never having expected such an outcome, Seska wanted to know about the meeting. “Oyal! What the hell happened this morning? You walked into the ready room a Cardassian Legate, walking out a Maquis commander. And Janeway….. She must have said something?”
Feeling completely relaxed, something extremely rare, he was enjoying himself. Knowing his wife realized the meeting had turned out well, enhanced the pleasure of drawing out the suspense regarding the details. “Janeway said the past is best left in the past, she now believes the shuttle did not stray into Cardassian space by accident, however, she had no knowledge concerning the mission.”
In disbelief, Seska stared at her husband. “This is all?”
Rising to his feet Oyal laughed. “Yes, this is all. However, I have the feeling before the rescue, her opinion of a certain Legate was quite different than now. I’m do not know what changed her attitude, however, I’m glad she no longer views me as the hot blooded shoulder of the past.”
Seska was still trying to gasp the results of the meeting. “What did you say or do during the discussion? To be granted the rank of commander, with an office, security details, full access to Voyager. I’m shocked. I’m pleased, but shocked. I thought we would have problems, require time, to earn their trust.”
Oyal looked at his wife. “So did I. They took me completely by surprise. No hesitation on their part. It’s a trust, I fully intend to repay.”
Walking around the desk, he stopped in front of his amazed wife. His respect for Janeway evident in his voice. “I’ll tell you more about what was said this evening, for now, I think we should have our mid-day meal. Undertaking the rescue of the man who had caused her so much pain, could not have been easy.  However, she did so! Janeway and Chakotay are very special people. Cardassians have caused both of them great suffering, giving them amble reason to turn their backs. Instead, they risked their lives in a rescue, then welcomed us into their crew. There are few who would have acted as they have.”
Seska uttered a small laugh. “The situation is almost identical to the one between Janeway and Chakotay. After the events with Cavit, Chakotay could have turned his back on the Starfleet crew, however he didn’t.”
Placing a hand on Oyal’s arm, she added softly. “Look at what they have accomplished. Despite the hard times of the past, we are very fortunate. My father tried everything to drive us apart, instead his actions led us to here….. Together. Free of Cardassia, the three of us will now be able to live the life we want. I will always be thankful for not betraying Chakotay to the Central government.”
Moving in the direction of the door Oyal smiled. “I will always be grateful a fighting ensign became a very unique captain.”
Leaving the office, they stepped over to the lift. Pressing the wall display, Seska turned amused eyes to her husband. “I’m not sure if the word unique covers the complete description of the command team, however, it is a start. I’m not even sure if a word exists to describe those two.”
Laughing, they stepped into the turbolift, as the doors slid back into position, Oyal watched as the name plate on his door disappeared from view. He would have been content with any posting on Voyager, he would be with wife and son, which was all that mattered. Instead, he had been shown trust and respect, far beyond what he could ever have imagined. Seconds later, they were walking down the corridor to their quarters, where they found Kayon in exactly the same position as when Oyal left earlier.
Seska walked over to her son. “How’s the reading coming along?”
With the thrill of new found knowledge lighting up his face, the boy looked up. “Great, there’s so much we were never taught. I’m only halfway through the second padd.”
Smiling, Seska held out her hand. “Come, let’s have lunch. You can continue afterwards.”
Quickly setting the padd down on the arm of the chair, Kayon accepted the hand as he rose to his feet. “About time! I’m hungry!”
Oyal rolled his eyes. “When are you not hungry?”
Kayon shrugged. “I’m a growing boy.”
Managing to refrain from laughing, Seska looked at her husband. “Well…. He is!”
Knowing it was two against one, Oyal did not reply. Instead, he opened the door, standing to the side as his wife and son exited into the corridor. Walking back to the turbolift Seska turned to Oyal. “If you have no objections, Evans found quarters for Kayon. It’s a small, unused room on the deck below ours. It has a fold-down wall bed, a desk with computer, a small replicator, small table with chairs. It’s smaller than regular crew quarters, however, Evans thought it would perfect for Kayon. Said it would give us some quiet time alone.”
Amused, Oyal shook his head as they stepped into the lift. “Between Evans and the command team….. There is no way we can forget we’re husband and wife.”
He looked down at Kayon. “How do you feel about having your own quarters?”
A big smile graced the boy’s face. “I like that. I won’t have to listen to you talking grown-up stuff.”
Turning to Seska, Oyal managed to keep himself from laughing. “I believe this means our son is on the side of Evans and the command team.”
Thoughtfully Seska looked at her husband. “Perhaps it’s because we’re the only family brought together here in the Delta Quadrant. The rest of the crew, including Janeway and Chakotay, all left family behind. I think they’re taking comfort in seeing us together, making sure we’re happy. It’s giving them a sense of hope.”
Entering the turbolift, for a moment Oyal remained silent. “You could be right, I had’t thought about it in such a way. However, as this might be the case with Evans, it is not with the command team. Neither left a spouse behind. And…. From what I’ve seen and heard where Janeway and Chakotay are concerned, I don’t think we’ll be the only couple on Voyager for very long.”
Seska laughed. “You sound like Tom Paris. There are some interesting rumours floating around Voyager, Tom has a betting pool going on those two.’
Oyal look at his wife. “Really! I’ll have to take a look.”
Tilting her head, Seska replied softly. “Be careful how you place your bet. If you won instead of your wife, someone might not be too happy. This is….. Unless you share your winnings!”
Amused, the Cardassian did not reply. When the doors opened, Oyal allowed Seska and Kayon to exit first, as he mulled over the subtle warning. Proceeding down the corridor to the mess hall, Oyal and Seska remained quiet, both wondering what the next few minutes would bring. This would be the first time facing a large number of the crew.
They were halfway down the hallway when, Telfer, Lang, Baxter, Andrews exited the mess hall. Startled, the four hesitated for a moment as four pair of eyes settled on Oyal. Then they continued walking. The crew was slowly becoming accustomed to seeing Seska in uniform, however, another Cardassian dressed as a Maquis, took a little getting used to.
As the two groups approached each other, Seska broke the uneasy silence. “Anything decent to eat?”
Trying to act natural Lang nodded. “Well sort of. The noodles are edible.”
Seska turned to Oyal. “Perhaps we’ll survive lunch.”
Aware of the eyes upon him, Oyal laughed. “Certainly, it can’t be all bad!”
Not knowing what to say or how to act, Telfer managed to shrug. “You can never be certain what Neelix is serving….”
Staring at Oyal’s collar, Telfer continued as he suddenly realized what he was seeing. “Neelix’s idea of food is slightly different than ours. Eh…… Commander.”
During the interchange, Seska closely watched the reaction of her crewmates. The surprised expression on Telfer, as he realized Oyal was now a Maquis commander, was interesting. As were the startle expressions of the other three. Again, she was relieved to see uncertainty but no hostility. “Well, I guess we better go eat before there is nothing left.”
Lang managed a last word. “Good luck.”
After parting nods, everyone continued on their way. Nearing the doors to the mess hall, Seska took a deep breath. “That went well, however, the biggest test will be inside.”
Oyal placed a reassuring hand on the arm of his wife, as the doors slid open. This was harder on Seska. It wasn’t just accepting a group of Cardassians onboard Voyager. For her it was far more personal…… She had worked, lived with this crew for some time, would their attitudes change even in the slightest, would she ever feel completely at ease.
Once inside, it required only seconds for the occupants facing the door to notice the new arrivals. Wondering why their companions had grown silent, the others began turning around. Staring for a second, glancing back at the person sitting opposite, they quickly looked down at their meals. Trying to watch out of the corner of their eyes, the diners appeared to be concentrating on their plates, even those who’s plates were now empty.
Walking over to Neelix’s kitchen, both Seska and Oyal registered the conversations ceasing one-by-one. It did not require their highly trained skills as agents, to be aware of everybody’s movements….. Or lack thereof!
Neelix smiled warmly. “Kayon…. How are you doing with the reading? Do you require any more?”
Picking up an empty tray, the boy placed it on the counter. “Not at the moment Uncle Neelix. I’m carefully studying everything you gave me. I’m enjoying learning all this stuff. It’s so different from what I was taught on Cardassia.”
The Talaxian beamed with pleasure as he placed a bowl with a glass on the tray. “Good for you! When you need more let me know. Voyager’s data banks are full of information, it will be a pleasure to download more for you to learn.”
“Thanks Uncle Neelix.” When Kayon stepped aside his parents stopped up to the food counter.             Both had registered Kayon’s title for Neelix, happy their son was adjusting, neither minded and refrained from asking questions. Oyal managed to keep from laughing, at the man he once called a simple trader, who was now dressed in a white cook’s apron, Voyager’s logo on the front with a white oversized chef’s cap. “Thanks Neelix for providing Kayon with sone stimulating pastime.”
Picking up two bowls Neelix placed them on Oyal’s tray. “My pleasure Mr. Oyal, my pleasure.”
Looking up Neelix quickly corrected himself. “Sorry, sorry, I should say Commander. I didn’t notice. I see you are now an official member of Voyager’s crew….. Good, good. Welcome! I’m at your service. Anything, Anything at all you need let me know. Now…. Here are your drinks. They contain juice from some fruit we discovered a couple of weeks back. It’s very good….. Must keep this crew healthy!”
Oyal looked at the Talaxian, not quite sure what category to place him in….. Trader, cook, undercover agent? “Neelix, I have not had the opportunity to thank you for helping in the rescue. If it had not been for you, we would probably still be prisoners of the Kazon.”
Picking up a large cooking spoon, Neelix looked at the Cardassian. “Why thank you Mr. Commander. Glad to be of service, anytime, anytime. I’ll tell you a little secret….. I don’t like the Kazon. Not only do they want everything for nothing, they’re not nice people. Not at all like Voyager. The way they treated Lieutenant Seska and Captain Janeway….. The Maje got what he deserved. Now….. Go enjoy your meals, I’m sure while you were with the Kazon decent food was nonexistent.”
Oyal snorted. “This Neelix would be an understatement.”
As they were talking to Neelix, Ayala entered. “Ah Kayon, good they’re feeding you. You were light as a feather, you’re a growing boy, needing lots of good food.”
Glancing over at Oyal, Seska smiled. While Kayon looked up at Ayala. “Don’t worry Uncle Mike, Neelix is keeping me fed. Makes up for the Kazon who gave us very little.”
Nodding to the others, Ayala walked over to join a couple of friends at a far table.
Seska and Oyal just shrugged. When they entered, Oyal had noticed there were only a couple of empty seats. As he turned away from Neelix, he started in the direction of a table close to the kitchen area, just two rows from where they were standing. Nodding to the occupants at the table beside and behind, Oyal noticed the first thing everybody eyes settled on, was the rank bar on his collar. Though surprise expressions followed, no-one appeared confrontational.
Oyal and Kayon sat side-by-side facing the kitchen, while Seska sat opposite. Without hesitation, Kayon immediately dug into his food with the enthusiasm of a hungry boy. However, after eying the substance on their plates, his parents followed at a less than eager pace.
Seska looked over at her son. “It would appear by the time we reach home, we are going to have an extended family consisting of uncles. Two of them in less than twenty-four hours.”
Kayon stopped shovelling food long enough to glanced at his mother. “Why not? They’re like uncles!”
    He returned to his eating.
Oyal, an amazed expression on his face, looked over at Neelix. “Is this the same person who bravely entered a Kazon compound, stood up to the Maje, smuggled in needed items, expertly manoeuvred the Maje, helping us to escape.”
Seska had a one-word answer. “Yes!”
At a table one row over, however closer to the windows, B’Elanna Torres sat quietly picking away at her food, while she watched the Cardassians. Beside her Tom Paris with Harry Kim opposite Tom. After several minutes B’Elanna suddenly slammed down her fork. “This won’t do!”
Picking up her plate, she marched down to stand beside Kayon, who completely engrossed in his lunch, did not notice the sudden rise of tension. “Well Seska!”
Oyal tensed! Knowing the reputation Torres had for a quick temper, he tried to foretell the Klingon’s next move. He did not have long to wait!
Expecting a plate full of food in her face, Seska looked up. “B’Elanna?”
Torres locked eyes with Seska. “Well…..? Here we are having executed an amazing rescue, and you still have not introduced us to your husband and son!”
B’Elanna Torres promptly sat down beside her startled shipmate. Years of training usually prevented Oyal and Seska from reacting to unexpected situations, however, this time neither could hide their surprise.
Releasing the breath he had been holding, Oyal gave his head a short, quick shake at the unusual method Torres had used to introduce herself. Meanwhile, Tom and Harry looked at each other, shrugged, picked up their plates, walking over to join the group.
Tom looked over at Seska. “You know….. B’Elanna’s right. Here….. I used my expert piloting skills to get us safely through the asteroid field…… Not once but twice! Harry here kept the echo displacements in place for hours! At least, don’t you think you owe us an introduction!”
After glancing at her very amused husband, Seska finally found her voice. Using her hand as an indicator the Cardassian made the introductions. “Oyal, Kayon, allow me to present Lieutenants B’Elanna Torres, Chief engineer, Chief conn officer Tom Paris, Chief of Operations Harry Kim. May I introduce you to my husband Oyal, my son Kayon.”
Oyal placed his hand on the shoulder of his son. “I’m afraid this young man is too busy to say anything, however, I can say thank you from all of us. We are extremely grateful to not only you, but to this entire crew.”
As Oyal’s voice carried around the mess hall, some of the uncertainty and tension began to disappear. B’Elanna had taken the first step in bridging the gap with the Cardassians. It was not that the crew wanted to maintain this division, it was as simple as not knowing how to erase it. Where they came from, if you met a Cardassian you fought him. How did one act around Cardassians, who were you shipmates and your superiors? This…. Had not been taught in the Alpha Quadrant.
Tom grinned. “Glad to be of service. Gave me the opportunity to show off my skills.”
Ignoring the look Seska, Torres, and Harry threw at him, Tom sat down in an empty seat at the table beside them, with Harry sitting down opposite him. B’Elanna glared at Tom. “For once flyboy did earn his keep. While Starfleet here did a great job with those echo displacements.”
From across the room Chell added his comment. “Maybe so, however, I heard Tom here almost put us nose first into one of those big rocks.”
As the sound of laughter echoed around the mess hall, Tom Paris, fork in hand, looked over at his crewmate. “The next time the command team decides we need some excitement, and chooses another absolute insane route, perhaps you would like to pilot this ship.”
At a nearby table, Heather rose to her feet. Picking up her empty plate, she stopped beside Tom’s table. “At least we can not complain of boredom.”
Before walking over to the recycling pad, Heather looked over at Seska. “We’re all glad the rescue was successful.”
    Seska smiled. “Thank you.”
After taking a drink, Seska turned to her son. “Kayon…. B’Elanna is our chief engineer.”
Eyes wide he looked up. “An engineer!”
Laughing Oyal explained. “I’m afraid my son is not interested in following in the footsteps of his parents. For some reason he has a fascination with engineering.”
Torres studied the young man staring at her. “Do you know anything about engineering?”
Kayon shrugged. “Just a little. My mother’s father insisted I be a soldier, the education council forced me to attend a military training facility. However, Father was able to obtain basic engineering data padds for me, which we hid from everyone.”
For a moment Torres appraised Kayon, then turned to his parents. “If you have no objections, there are many basic, non-dangerous, maintenance jobs in engineering, which Kayon can do. It will afford him the opportunity to learn, at the same time allowing my staff to use their time on more important tasks. We’ll have to clear this with the captains, however, I see no reason why they would object.”
Seska turned to her husband. “B’Elanna is the best engineer in the Maquis, or for this matter in the Federation, I knew she can be trusted to watch out for his welfare. This could be the perfect opportunity for Kayon.”
Looking at the faces of the two sitting opposite him, Oyal analyzed the offer. Making a decision he turned to his son. “I agree, there will never be a better opportunity. Kayon, you must listen to Lieutenant Torres very carefully, follow her instructions exactly. Engineering is no place for games.”
Face solemn, eyes dancing with excitement, Kayon looked at his father. “I know, I promise!”
Seska turned to B’Elanna. “Thanks. This will solve more than one problem. I have a feeling between you and Neelix, Kayon will be too busy to get into mischief.”
Rising from a nearby table, Chell picked up his tray. Heading for the disposal unit by the door, he stopped when abreast of Oyal. “Well Seska, I think you can say goodby to your son. Once B’Elanna gets hold of anyone with engineering capabilities, she never lets them go.”
Torres glared at her engineer. “Would you like to pull double duty today?”
Chell grinned. “No thanks Lieutenant. I’m only acknowledging all the work you have, how badly you need people.”
Torres raised her hand. “I just remembered, the plasma injectors require cleaning this afternoon. I’m sure you will be happy to take this concern off my mind.”
Eyes showing her amusement, Seska looked up at the blue-skinned Bolian. “I would advise you, not to remind a certain chief engineer of exactly how much of a workload she carries. There’s no telling what interesting assignments she would find for you to do.”
Realizing he should keep his mouth shut, Chell started in the direction of his original destination. “I’ll see you in engineering Lieutenant Torres.”
B’Elanna had a parting remark. “Chell…. Don’t forget the plasma injectors!”
Placing his tray on the recycling pad, Chell turned back to his superior. “Yes Lieutenant, I’m heading there now.”
After Chell left, Seska turned to her amused husband. “B’Elanna has her engineers well trained.”
Laughing, Oyal looked over at Torres. “So I see. When do you want Kayon to start?”
Torres glanced at the eager eyed boy. “Well…. From his face he certainly appears to be ready. What about fourteen thirty today. I have a short meeting with the captains, I’ll run this by them. I should be back in engineering by then.”
Seska glanced at Oyal. “Fine with us, Kayon can do more reading until then.”
She turned to her son. “Okay with you?”
    Overjoyed the boy nodded. “Great!”
Finishing his meal, Oyal stood up. “Good…. Now we have our son settled with his duties, if you will excuse me, I must begin preparing for a meeting with Tuvok and Evans.”
Rising to her feet, Seska picked up her tray. “I should return the bridge, coming Kayon we’ll drop you off at quarters.”
Sliding to his feet, Kayon stood at attention beside B’Elanna. “Lieutenant Torres, I will be in engineering at fourteen thirty hours.”
Amused and proud of his son, Oyal reached down, picking up the boy’s tray. As B’Elanna quickly finished her meal, the three Cardassians deposited everything on the recycling unit then headed for the door.
Just as they were about to exit, the doors on the far side opened and a voice thundered through the room. “Oyal!”
All heads swung in the direction of the voice, watching as two men crossed the room. Neelix, his hand holding a large spoon, stood poised over a pot. Forks on their way to various mouths hung in the air. Cups, glasses suspended by unmoving hands. No one moved, everything frozen in time and space! Waiting for Bajorians and Cardassians to come face-to-face.
Immediately recognizing the source of the voice, knowing there was no escape, Oyal stood quietly. His hands resting lightly on the shoulders of his son. Heaving a resigned sigh, he glanced over at Seska. “Janeway did say the past has a way of catching up.”
Quickly the newcomers closed the distance, coming to an abrupt stop before the waiting Cardassians. As huge smiles lit up the faces of Ture Jarlin and Oedoxf Ery, Jarlin broke the death-like silence. “Oyal, it is good to see you again! Especially under much better circumstances….. Though this is the last place we ever expected you to show up!”
Shifting his weight, Oyal laughed. “Yes….. I can certainly agree with this, however, it is a pleasure to see the two of you again. I was surprised when Chakotay mentioned you were onboard Voyager.”
Ery glanced over at Seska before turning back to Oyal. “It was a big shock finding out you are Seska’s husband.”
In mock anger, Jarlin looked at Seska. ”Shame on you for not telling us Oyal is your husband. You must be aware of his antics on Bajor and DS-9.”
Seska gave an innocent shrug. “Of course, I know the full story. However, up until now it seemed a good idea to keep my identity a secret.”
Watching the exchange, the totally mystified occupants of the mess hall stared at the five standing by the door. They had expected a confrontation, after all Bajorians and Cardassians were bitter enemies. Especially, with this Cardassian. Instead Jarlin and Ery were acting as if they had just found a long lost friend.
Completely bewildered, Tom turned to the woman standing beside him. “B’Elanna…. Somebody better explain what is going on! And soon! First Janeway and Chakotay were supposed to fight each other…… Look what happened! The Cardassian occupational commander and Bajorian resistance fighters are supposed to hate each other. Well….. Unless I’m dreaming, this does not appear to be the case. This is one hell of an upside down ship!”
Torres crossed her arms. “Flyboy, you will soon be enlightened. And I promise you….. It will be a story you least expect.”
As B’Elanna’s eyes caught those of Seska’s, the chief engineer could see pride shining in the eyes of the Cardassian. Torres threw her shipmate a quick, short nod, Seska had no reason to be ashamed of who she is. It would have been so easy to hate Seska for just being Cardassian, it had taken effort, the half-Klingon had fought her inner demons and won. Now, Torres truly believed she and Seska would once again be friends. A friend, the chef engineer would be proud to acknowledge to the other Maquis, once they returned home.
Uttering a soft chuckle, Jarlin looked down at the boy. “So Kayon is your son. We were under the impression Evek and Talnir were his parents.”
Patting Kayon’s shoulder, Oyal shook his head. “No, while on Bajor we thought it would be safer for everyone to think so.”
Ery nodded. “Yes, it was much safer. There were some in the resistance who would have targeted him as a way to hurt you.”
He looked down at Kayon, who was listening intently to the exchange. “Young man, do you know how brave your father is?”
Glancing up at Oyal, Kayon nodded. “Yes Sir!”
Ery smiled. “Some day we’ll tell you a story about just how brave he really is. We know Evek is with you, what about Talnir?”
A shadow passed over Oyal’s face. “Unfortunately no. Talnir was killed back on Cardassia, just before we left.”
Shaking his head Jarlin looked down at the deck. “Too bad. Despite being Cardassian she was well liked by many of Bajorians. A real shame.”
Oyal looked at the two Bajorians. “I was relieved to hear from Naprem you and the others reached the resistance hideout safely. I was concerned about Cardassian patrols.”
Jarlin nodded. “It took longer than usual to reach our resistance group, often hiding for several hours to be safe, however, we did make it. Your actions afterwards…. Sending information by Naprem was risky, however, you and Dukat made a huge difference in the success of our raids. Of course you are well aware of this! Just before we ended up here, I was on DS-9. Dukat and his family are safe. There are a large number of Cardassian now on the station, Dukat mentioned they are not welcome on Cardassia Prime. I presume they are members of your resistance force. I did recognize Talnir’s parents.”
Glancing at his wife, Oyal nodded. “I’m glad to hear they reached the station. Would you join us for our evening meal tomorrow?”
Ery did not hesitate as he answered for both himself and Jarlin. “Sir…. It will be an honor and a pleasure to dine with you and Seska.”
Eyes gleaming with mischief, Seska looked at the Bajorians. “Will nineteen hundred be okay? This will give me the opportunity to learn more about my husband’s activities on Bajor. Make sure he did not pay attention to other women.”
In mock fear, Oyal turned to his wife. “I give you my word, I have eyes only for you.”
Both Jarlin and Ery laughed. “Seska, nineteen hundred will be perfect. And Commander, welcome to Voyager’s crew. We look forward to working with you.”
Oyal responded sincerely to his new comrades. “Thank you. Though this assignment is totally unexpected, I’m looking forward to serving on Voyager.”
As the Bajorians turned away, the three Cardassians left. The moment Oyal exited, Voyager’s crew descended on Jarlin and Ery. Tom clamped his hand on Jarlin’s shoulder. “You are not leaving here until you explain what this was all about!”
Perching themselves on the edge of a table, Jarlin and Ery began relating the details of their escape from DS-9. An escape engineered by the then Cardassian Occupational Commander of Bajor. Of the danger Oyal and Dukat placed themselves in, by sending information to the Bajorian resistance. Of how, these two Cardassians, often circumvented orders from Cardassia, helping the Bajorians survive the occupation.
Proving to the crew of the Maquis ship Voyager, not all Cardassians are the same. Proving, there were some, who defy their Cardassian government policy of war and conquest.

Chapter 61

As the door of the ready room slid back into position behind Oyal, Chakotay threw back his head and uttered a loud laugh.
Folding her hands in her lap, crossing her legs, Kathryn spoke very softly. “Something has amused you?”
Amusement dancing in his dark eyes, Chakotay placed his hands on the arms of the chair. “Leave it to Kathryn Janeway to tame a Cardassian!”
Appearing the personification of innocence she replied. “After taming a Maquis, a Cardassian was easy.”
This only increased Chakotay’s amusement. “Try taming a Starfleet Captain.”
A very serious Kathryn retorted. “Who said I was tamed?”
Chakotay could see the merriment in the glare. He could also see the challenge radiating from her blue eyes, daring him to respond. “Who said I was referring to you?”
Leaning forward, Kathryn placed both arms on the desk, folding her hands as she spoke very softly. “May I ask, who else would you be referring to?
Chakotay smiled. “I did make the acquaintance of several Starfleet captains in the past. However….. I was concerned how you and Oyal would interact, obviously I was worried for nothing. Though, I am surprised Cardassians have a sense of humor….. And I never expected, this meeting to go as smoothly as it did. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at Oyal’s attitude right from the beginning, glad, we were able offer him the position we had discussed. Though his cultural suggestion, was a bit of a shock. The last thing I would expect from a Cardassian!”
His tactics of changing the subject did not go unnoticed. Tilting her head Kathryn allowed her co-captain to retreat graciously, However, she did comment very softly. “Now…. Who was tamed?”
Laughing, when Chakotay did not reply, she continued. “I think the learning process is just beginning. Down on the planet I saw Seska and Oyal in a setting humans never see. Then with Evek here on Voyager…… Nothing was ever mentioned in Starfleet’s files about their everyday, normal interactions.”
Just then Tuvok’s voice interrupted them. “Captains, I have the translation. I’m sending it to both your computers now.”
    Janeway responded. “Thanks Tuvok.”
In unison they reached over tapping their computers. Leaning back in their chairs, eyes glued to the lit up screens, they quickly becoming engrossed in the scenes and conversations being conveyed. Lunchtime came and went, as the command team watched, listened to the information. Information so vital it had claimed the lives of two Cardassian agents.
They were less than halfway through the recordings when B’Elanna walked in, handing each captain a padd. “Here’s the information you requested on the warp core.”
Chakotay looked over. “Thanks B’Elanna. Has all the repairs been completed on the shields?”
She nodded. “Right now everything is functioning within normal parameters. I ran into Seska along with her husband and son, down in the mess hall. Evidently, Kayon has a keen interest in engineering. I suggested allowing him to do some of the simple maintenance jobs in engineering, see where this leads to. Seska and Oyal agreed, just wanted to run this by you.”
Chakotay shrugged. “I don’t see why not. It will give him the opportunity to learn from the ground up….. And from the best.”
Janeway was also pleased. “Excellent idea. It will help to keep him occupied, an superb opportunity for the boy to acquire, not only engineering shills, also knowledge concerning starships, from the ground up.… And Voyager will eventually have another well trained engineer. Keep us updated on his progress, this could turn out well for everyone.”
B’Elanna nodded. “Will do. Oh…. Jarlin and Ery arrived just as we finished, sending shockwaves through everyone. By the end of the day, everyone on Voyager will know what occurred on Bajor.”
Chakotay shifted in his chair. “Good, this will help settle the Cardassians. I’m sure Jarlin and Ery will have a lot of questions thrown at them, especially from the four other Bajorians.”
For a moment B’Elanna hesitated. Leaning back Janeway asked. “Is there anything else.”
The engineer tried to gather her thoughts. “When I was talking with Seska and Oyal, she was sitting beside me. All I heard was the voice of the person who had been my friend and colleague for the past couple of years. I couldn’t see her face, her way of speaking her mannerisms were the same. I now understand exactly what you were trying to explain, Seska has not changed, she may look different, however, she’s the same person. If I was able to work beside her, have coffee together, there is no reason for this not to continue.”
Both Chakotay and Janeway were extremely pleased. Janeway smiled. “It would appear B’Elanna Torres, you have taken a major step in helping the Cardassians to adjust. Your interaction with Seska and Kayon will be a blueprint for the rest of the crew. “
Torres nodded. “Well…. Jarlin and Ery certainly helped. I’ll start showing Kayon around engineering, find out how much he already knows. We’ll see…..”
With that the chief engineer returned to her duties. Afterwards, the command team went back to watching the recording. Another couple of hours passed, with neither of the captains speaking more than a few words to each other, breaking their study of the material for only the occasional coffee or tea. Several times a specific segment was replayed, making sure they completely understood what had been said or heard.  Their expressions revealing the agitation, anger produced by what they were watching.
They were three-quarters of the way through the recordings when Janeway sadly shook her head. “This agent had tremendous courage. The material covers three year or more of undercover operations within the gamma Quadrant. The meetings he recorded, prove beyond a doubt, the Cardassian government was plotting with the Founders to invade, seize control of, not only Federation space, the whole Alpha quadrant. The atrocities which they committed…. It’s too bad my father never saw this.”
For a moment Chakotay stared at the screen. “There is a possibility he will, Oyal sent a copy to Gul Dukat. Ro knows my contact to the Cardassian resistance was Dukat, hopefully she will contact him.”
Janeway remained quiet for several seconds. “Do you think Dukat would show her this recording. From the time he received the information until you were brought here, he never said anything. If Seska thought the Maquis were responsible for Oyal’s disappearance…… So too would Dukat.”
Still watched the screen, Chakotay leaned his head back. “I don’t know. Dukat was Oyal’s right hand man, he’ll take over as head of the resistance. Ro will take my place. With so much at stake, I see no reason for the Maquis and Cardassian resistance not to continue working together. Don’t forget, my last contact with Dukat occurred just after Oyal disappeared, at which point, not knowing what happened, Dukat would have been extremely careful. Since I’ve also disappeared……. ? Hopefully, they will be in touch with each other. If Ro see this, I strongly believe she will attempt to contact your father immediately. It’s the indisputable proof we had been seeking. All we can do is hope somehow Ro, Dukat, and your father will be in contact. Hope things will fall into place as they should.”
Deeply troubled, Janeway nodded. “I understand what your saying. Until Voyager reaches home, there is nothing we can do but maintain a positive attitude about events in the Alpha quadrant. We will have enough to contend with, without the worrying over something we can do absolutely nothing about.”
As it was with her co-captain. Janeway’s attention was still focused on the monitor. Suddenly her body tensed. “What the…! Chakotay… Can this be…..?”
Looking over at the other desk, she could see the utter shock on Chakotay’s face. Moving his chair closer, he stared in disbelief. “I think so. Exactly as it was described to me! Unbelievable!”
Janeway glanced at her grim-faced companion. “There is only one way to be certain.”
Gasping in shock, she pointed to her monitor. “Look….. At the comment on the screen. This has to be….”
Activation the comm system, Chakotay’s strained face was the mirror image of the one looking at him. “I hate doing this, however, we must be absolutely certain…… Javis, report to the ready room.”
