STARTREK VOYAGER --------CARDASSIAN

Chapter 20

As Janeway’s icy-blue eyes settled on Tom Paris, his stomach started dong flip-flops. He could feel the glacial effect spreading from his eyes to the back of his skull, then down to the tips of his toes. Determined not to let his friends down, he stood straight and tall, returning the captain’s gaze. If Tuvok had the courage to face Janeway, admitting what he had done, then Tom Paris could do the same.
Her voice vibrated throughout the almost empty holodeck. “Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris, on the charge of lying to a Starfleet officer….. Were you not released from prison, into my custody, under the provision you would aid in the capture or in this case recapture of Maquis leader Chakotay?”
Not understanding where she was going with this, Tom hesitated slightly before answering. Then realizing he couldn’t be in any more trouble with Chakotay and his crewmates than with Janeway, he replied. “Yes Captain, this is correct.”
Janeway’s next words startled him. “Is it not also correct you lied to me? You agreed to help for only one reason….. Because you felt I had very little chance of success? And…. Did you not withhold information which could have led to failure of my mission?”
Confused, he looked first at Chakotay then back at Janeway. “I’m not sure to what you are referring.”
She glared at him. “Don’t brother replying. I already have your answer. Computer, on screen, Exhibit Two. The conversation between Tom Paris and myself on the bridge of the Explorer, when I was approaching the Badlands in search of Chakotay, after his prison break.”
Once again the screen lit up.

Tom: “Captain, Captain, you don’t understand. It really doesn’t matter. This is Chakotay’s territory. I, or someone else, can tell you where he is, however, getting there is another story. Why do you think he chose the Badlands? You have to know and understand the storms, which takes months of close study. Even with the Federation’s advance computers, this data must be collected right on location….. over a period of time. Then, and only then, it would take a whole fleet of ships to harm the Maquis in here. The possibility of ships surviving, either Starfleet of Cardassian, while engaged in battle is virtually impossible. Chakotay knows this.”
Tom: “Besides, Chakotay has a warning system, set up along the safe routes through the Badlands. This is one of his ‘little secrets’. I found out only by accident and only because I was a pilot. He knows the moment any ship enters the area, he has several surprises set up along these pathways. No ship travels in the Badlands…… Unless Chakotay allows it to do so.”
Tom “If I thought you had a chance….. I would not be here.”

Janeway looked at him. “Well…. Mr. Paris, I would say this was clear enough. Wouldn’t you agree? Lying to, misleading a Starfleet captain is a very serious offence.”
Uncertain how this would appear to the Maquis, Tom glanced over at Chakotay. As with Janeway, both Evans and Chakotay wore unreadable expressions.
The captain folded her hands on the table. “It would appear you have gotten into a lot of trouble. Lying, then disobeying a direct order. Mr. Paris…. When Captain Cavit ordered you to quarters…. Did you obey?’
Knowing she had the answer, Paris took a deep breath. “No Captain, I did not.”
Janeway held up a padd. “You certainly did not. Would you enlightened us, as to your movements immediately after you left the bridge.”
Tom ran his tongue over dry lips. “After I left the bridge, I did go to my quarters. However, only long enough to leave my comm badge. Then I left by way of a ventilation duct.”
A small smile formed on Janeway’s face. “Mr. Paris, would you please explain why you left the comm badge.”
Paris wished the deck would open up under his feet. “I was afraid Cavit would ask the computer for verification as to my location. By leaving the badge the computer would determine I was in quarters.”
The eyes of Kathryn Janeway drilled into her prisoner. “Well Mr. Paris, by attempting to avoid detection, obviously you knew this act was in gross violation of a direct order. Did you not?’
Tom Paris wondered if he would survive seventy years in the brig. “Yes Captain, I did.”
She turned her attention back to the padd in her hand. “Okay Mr. Paris, let’s see what we have next. Ah yes, firing a phaser at a Starfleet officer. Computer, Exhibit Two-A. The scene in sickbay when Captain Cavit was about to administer the fatal injection to Captain Chakotay.”

Cavit holding the hypospray beside the Chakotay’s neck.
Cavit: “Ready Maquis? Oh…. There is just one more thing you should know, you will have a couple of hours to reflect on this. I fear the problem with our warp core will suddenly escalate. I’ll have time to evacuate all of my crew to your ship. However, there will not be enough time to send your crew down to the planet. They will be caught in the explosion, along with that convict Tom Paris and the annoying Vulcan, Tuvok.”
Cavit: “Oh, don’t worry Chakotay, for them it will be quick. They will only know minutes before. Much quicker and far more pleasant than it will be for you.”
    Chakotay: “You will pay….”
The sickbay doors were open just a couple of inches when Tom Paris fired at Cavit, sending the lethal hypospray flying.

As the images faded away, Harry Kim uttered a small gasp. He had not known Cavit had come to within a hair’s width of administering the fatal mixture. If Tom had not been such a good shot……
Janeway turned from the screen to Paris. “I guess there is no doubt you fired at Captain Cavit.”
Tom Paris remained silent. This whole hearing was not making sense…. Or so he thought.
The captain continued. “Very well Mr. Paris, we will address the last charge against you, aiding in the escape of the Maquis in a moment.”
Her eyes settled on the prisoner next to Paris. Mr. Kim, when you attended the Academy were you not taught the correct manner of addressing a superior officer?”
“Yes Captain. Somehow Harry Kim managed not to choke on the words.
Her eyes passed over each of the five. “This scene takes place after the conversations between Chakotay and Tuvok. Computer, Exhibit Three. The first conversation between Commander Tuvok and Ensign Harry Kim on the bridge.”

His fists clenched at his sides, Harry Kim stormed over. Outrage clearly written across his face he almost yelled at the Vulcan.
Harry: “Tuvok! Is it true? Is Cavit executing Chakotay?”
Tuvok: “It amazes me how quickly news travels on a ship of this size. No one other than the guards and myself were aware of Cavit’s intentions. How Ensign do you know?”
Harry: “Tuvok! What does it matter! Is it true?”
Tuvok: “Yes it is true. The execution is takin place right now in sickbay. I realize you must find this stressful, especially as the Commander helped to save your life. However, you must realize, accept Commander Chakotay is a convicted outlaw. Due to the fact we are stranded here in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Cavit is justified in his actions.”
The voice of Harry Kim rose by several degrees. “Tuvok! How can you make such a statement? Captain Janeway and Chakotay were working together. They saved my life! Do you really believe this is justified? This is Chakotay’s payment for helping a Starfleet captain?”
Tuvok: “This is difficult for all of you. Commander Chakotay did have a truce with Captain Janeway. This truce ended when Mr. Cavit assumed command. Under Federation laws, Mr. Chakotay was convicted of treason and sentenced to prison. Due to the situation there was no way to enforce this sentence. Captain Cavit took the actions he felt were necessary to protect the Federation we serve. Actions which are following the laws of this Federation. As members of Starfleet we must accept the authority of our commanding officers, even if we do not understand or agree with their actions or orders.”
Harry: “Even if those orders amount to murder. Cavit was about to kill everyone on the Maquis ship. Helpless people who could not defend themselves! This is not murder? This is justified by Federation laws? If Captain Janeway was still in command would she have turned on Chakotay? NO DAMN WAY!”

Janeway shook her head. “Ensign Kim, fresh out of the Academy. You not only yelled at and spoke improperly to your commanding officer, you also refused to answer a direct question. Not bad for your first posting.”
Ensign Kim was at a loss for words. He looked over at Chakotay. Sure he and the others had gone against regulations, however, they had done so to save  Chakotay’s life. He began to wonder what Janeway had said, or done, to Chakotay for him to allow her this type of extreme action against them.
Kathryn Janeway was not finished. “Now Mr. Kim. You provided Commander Tuvok with information leading to the escape of a Federation prisoner. Computer, Exhibit Three-A. The second conversation between Commander Tuvok and Ensign Kim on the bridge.

Harry: “Lieutenant Tuvok, something is strange with sickbay.”
    Tuvok: “Ensign?”
Harry: “I…. I wanted see if Chakotay…. If…. If it was over. There is a force field blocking all readings. It’s impossible to obtain any indication of life-signs, or the condition of anyone inside the room. Also there is another force field blocking the doors.”
Tuvok: “It is unusual. However, Captain Cavit probably erected the field to prevent Chakotay from escaping, should he break the restraints. It is a sensible precaution.”
Harry: “But…. It is not the usual type of force field. This one would prevent someone from entering, not leaving. Also, the outgoing comm line is locked down, enabling only in-going communication.”
The Vulcan studied his panel, then…..
Tuvok: “Security detail to sickbay. Enter if possible with phasers ready. Place Captain Cavit and Dr. Fitzgerald under arrest. Do not allow them near Chakotay.”

Heaving a disappointed sigh, Janeway shook her head. “Well…. Ensign Harry Kim, not only did you aid in the escape of a prisoner, your actions caused a Starfleet officer to act against, not just one officer, but two.”
For a moment she glared at Kim, almost causing the young ensign to tremble. “Do you have any regrets talking to Commander Tuvok, in the manner which you did?”
Harry Kim took a deep breath to calm his nerves.”Yes Captain. If I had known about the conversations between Chakotay and Commander Tuvok, I would not have spoken in such a manner. I was unaware of Commander Tuvok’s attempts to aid Chakotay. It is obvious now Tuvok found the situation just as unacceptable as I did. He was respecting Captain Chakotay’s request not to interfere. If I had been aware of this, I would have worked with Tuvok to find a way to save Chakotay.”
Janeway looked at Kim with an indefinable expression on her face. “I see. However, other than this you have no regrets?”
The young ensign looked Janeway in the eye as he answered her question. “Yes Captain, I have one other regret. I should have taken action sooner!”
Kathryn Janeway did a perfect imitation of a Vulcan as she raised both eyebrows. “Very well ensign.”
Once again her eyes focused on Tom Paris. “The last charge against you is coupled with the charges against Lieutenant Telfer, Ensign Lang.”
Her eyes shifted to the couple at the end of the line. “Aiding in the escape of prisoners, arming said prisoners, actions directing leading to the take over of the Explorer by the Maquis. Computer, Exhibit Four. The scene outside the cargo bay just as the Maquis escape.”

As the Maquis rushed out of the cargo bay, Telfer and Lang found themselves restrained by two of the outlaws.
Evans: “Trevor, find something to tie these two up. We’ll take their comm badges, leave them in the cargo bay.”
A breathless Tom Paris rounded a corner.
Paris: Evans, we have to hurry! Cavit has sentenced Chakotay to death. They’re already on their way to sickbay where the execution will take place. They are also planning to torture Chakotay by injecting him with a slow working extremely painful poison.”
Evans: “Quick we need to find weapons.”
Telfer: “You’ll never find them in time! Besides Tuvok’s security codes will never be broken. Let us help you, we can open the weapons locker!”
Evans: “Go ahead, we’ll be watching every move.”
Quickly the group, with Telfer and Lang in the lead, moved down the corridor. Coming abreast of a door Lang, without hesitation, keyed in the entry code. Once inside both Telfer and Lang opened the hand phaser locker, then handed out the weapons.”
Evans: “While we rescue Chakotay, Javis take over the bridge, Chell take over engineering, the rest of spread out through the ship. However, do not under any circumstances harm any of the Starfleet personnel.”

When the images faded for a moment there was only silence. Then Janeway fastened her eyes on Telfer and Lang. “Any regrets as to your actions.”
Since they were already in deep trouble, one more breech of conduct would not matter. Joining hands the pair answered in unison. “No Captain! We do not!”
There was a strange smile on the face of Kathryn Janeway. Suddenly, she turned her attention back to Tom Paris. “Mr. Paris, isn’t it true this was, in fact, the second time you helped Chakotay escape Federation officials?”
Tom looked confused. “In all honesty Captain, I have no idea to what you are referring.”
She feigned surprise. “Really….. Allow me to refresh your memory. Computer Exhibit Five and Five-A. The conversation between myself and Admiral Janeway via computer, in my ready room onboard the Explorer, while I was en route to Syzygy. Plus the conversation, between myself and Captain Chakotay, in my quarters onboard Voyager, while recovering from my injuries. Previous authorization confirmation gamma-zeta-one for accessing personal records.”

Admiral Janeway: “Kathryn! We may have a problem. A member of Chakotay’s crew has been captured…. His pilot.”
Admiral Janeway: “I was right…. It’s Tom Paris.”
Kathryn: “Strange…. Tuvok never mentioned Paris.”
Admiral Janeway: “Under questioning, Tom did admit to joining the Maquis right after his escape. However, he became part of Chakotay’s crew less than two weeks ago, after Tuvok’s last report. Paris refused to answer any more questions. Told us if we wanted information on the Maquis…. Then we should speak with Chakotay.”
Kathryn: “A real smart aleck. Perhaps a few years in a penal colony will teach him some manners.”
Admiral Janeway: “Our patrol ship, the Roddenberry, spotted a shuttle heading for a colony on Majel, which we believe is one of Chakotay’s main sources of supplies. When the shuttle ignored the Roddenberry hails, Captain Eugene suspected it was Maquis. Except for trying to outrun the patrol Paris offered no resistance. Eugene easily boarded and arrested young Paris without a struggle.”
Admiral Janeway: “Kathryn, this will sound strange, but I have a feeling there is more to this….. I don’t know what, it’s a gut reaction. Something just doesn’t add up. I reviewed the log records from both ships. The comm system onboard the shuttle was working perfectly. Paris would have known any reply, would have been better than ignoring The Roddenberry. That boy is an excellent  pilot, flying a craft with a great deal of maneuverability, not to mention fully armed. In my opinion, Tom only made a half-hearted attempt to escape.”
Admiral Janeway: “No! We made the arrest TOO easily. I’ve come to the conclusion….. For some unknown reason Tom Paris wanted to be captured.”
Kathryn: “Perhaps he felt escape impossible. Or, he was tired of playing the part of a rebel.”
Admiral Janeway: “Hmmmmmm. Well….. We’ll probably never know. However, this could affect your mission. Since Paris was not only part of Chakotay’s crew, but also his pilot, most likely the raid will be called off. According to Tuvok, Chakotay is extremely cautious. Very quick to change plans as the slightest hint of a problem.”
Kathryn: “This time, he may not.”
Kathryn: “Even if Paris did have knowledge of the raid, and he did betray the Maquis, at this stage what could we do?”
Kathryn: “No….. Not dropping off the supplies would be a clear indication Paris did reveal Chakotay’s plans. By going ahead…… It appears we have no knowledge of any raid. We know the Maquis are in desperate need of these drugs. This is why I arranged for some difficult to obtain medicines to be included. As long as we follow our original plans, make it appear we have no knowledge of the Maquis in the area, I think Chakotay will go ahead. And if he does, I’ll be waiting. The best course will be to continue. I see no reason to cancel.”
Kathryn: “There is another point for going ahead. The Syzygians really need the medicine. A lot of good will result, even if we fail to capture Chakotay.”
Admiral Janeway: “You’re right on this last point. We should continue, the Syzygians are expecting the shipment, it wouldn’t be fair not to make the delivery. Hopefully, we’ll succeed with our hidden agenda. Nothing will please me more than seeing Chakotay in prison. The Maquis have been causing too much trouble for too long. Good luck! You’re going to need it!”
Kathryn: “Thanks Dad. This is the first time Starfleet managed to arrest a member of Chakotay’s crew, perhaps, his luck is running out. I’ll contact you when I have the Maquis leader in custody. Captain Janeway out.”
    beep
Chakotay:  “I can answer your father’s question. We sustained some damages during a battle with a Cardassian attack cruiser. On our way back to headquarters, a major problem developed with navigation. Tom was on his way to obtain a piece of badly needed equipment. I had been under the impression he betrayed me, giving himself up instead of bringing the part back. I found out it was just the opposite. The Starfleet patrol was on a direct course for my disabled ship. Tom allowed himself to be captured, diverting attention away from us. It gave B’Elanna time to complete temporary repairs, so we were able to return to the Badlands.”

Tuvok glanced over at Paris. In total astonishment Harry turned to stare at his friend. Wondering if Tom would ever be a free man. For a moment Tom Paris stared down at the deck. This was the strangest hearing, court martial, or whatever he had ever heard about.
For what seemed an eternity, Janeway stared down at the table. Gaining control of her emotions. Finally raising her eyes, her face as hard as the hull on a ship, her gaze traveled over the five waiting for her judgement.
Neither of the five expected mercy. The facts were there, before their eyes. Despite the result of their actions they had committed mutiny, acted improperly with superior officers, aided the escape of Federation prisoners, broken at least a dozen laws of Starfleet and the Federation.
Then, in the form of Kathryn Janeway, the heavy hand of Federation justice fell. “Commander Tuvok, Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris, Ensign Harry Kim, Lieutenant Telfer, Ensign Lang, the evidence against you is overwhelming and clear. In addition…. Each one, freely and without coercion, clearly admitted having no regrets regarding your actions.”
She waited a moment before handing down her decision. “You have left me no choice…. No recourse but to bring down the verdict….. Guilty as charged!

Chapter 21

The words vibrated throughout the room…. Guilty as charged…. Guilty as charged. Bouncing off the grey walls to land at the feet of the condemned.
Tuvok stood quietly with raised eyebrow, no trace of concern on his Vulcan features. Tom Paris felt anger stirring inside. He had been convinced Janeway was giving him a second chance, for the first time in years he felt a sense of belonging. Now, any hope for a decent life had been ripped away.
Harry Kim could not accept the words he had just heard. Starfleet had been his dream. He had worked so hard at becoming a perfect Starfleet officer. Now…. What would his parents and girlfriend think. His fists clenched into tight fists.
Telfer and Lang gripped each other’s hands until their knuckles went white. They had hoped to start a new life together. Now….. Would Janeway show some mercy, at least, allow them to serve their sentence together. They doubted any kindness would be bestowed.
Janeway’s authoritative voice broke into their thoughts. Slowly she repeated the words which sounded like doom to those accused. “Guilt as charged….!”
    Then!
Speaking words they had trouble comprehending.
    Words falling on disbelieving ears.
Again the three words repeated. “Guilty as charged…. Of having the courage to disregard your training, of having the courage to know Cavit was wrong, having the courage to do that which was right, the courage to stop a terrible, terrible tragedy from occurring.”
Suddenly the walls of the holodeck changed from drab grey to a peaceful light blue. With a smile on her face Kathryn Janeway gazed at those standing confused and stunned before her. “And with this courage, saving the lives of not only Chakotay and myself, but also this whole crew of Voyager.”
Suddenly, Tom Paris threw up his hands. “We’ve been Janewayed!”
Tuvok raised an eyebrow. “Indeed Mr.Paris, I do believe you are correct. We have been Janewayed.”
Grinning, almost chocking to keep from laughing, Chakotay and Evan’s looked at each other. Both knew, as long as Kathryn Janeway was onboard, they would be hearing the word more than once before reaching home.
It required a moment longer before Harry Kim realized the truth…. They had been tricked, the victims of a very elaborate plan. He looked over at Telfer and Lang, who were standing there open-mouthed, disbelief, astonishment written across their faces. The three exchanged shocked, startled glances before turning back to Janeway.
    Turning back to their dreams!
Now the face looking at them was no longer hard as stone. Now it was filled with a captain’s pride as she gazed at her five crew members before her. The tone of her voice left no doubts as to her true feelings. “I have placed the highest possible citation in each of your files, both Starfleet and Maquis. No captain will ever be as proud as I am of you. Going through the records, picking the segments for today, I was humbled by what I saw.”
For a moment, she looked down at her hands folded on the table. Raising her eyes to their faces, the captain’s voice betrayed the depth of her feelings. “Harry Kim, fresh out of the Academy on his very first assignment, standing up to a superior officer, because he knew an atrocity was being committed. Paris, Telfer, Lang, who had the courage to do the unthinkable. And Tuvok, ‘ignoring’, the extra security precautions. Why? Due to his Vulcan and Starfleet training, unable to take action against Cavit, since Cavit was acting within Federation law, Tuvok took the only logical course of action open to him. Today, once again, you did me proud. Though faced with the uncertainty as to your fate, not one of you regretted your actions, not one of you attempted to negate the charges with some absurd excuse. As it should be, there was pride in your voices as you stood by your decisions. Each one, stating you had no regrets, looked me in the eye. Your voices never wavering.”
Playing with a padd, Chakotay turned to the Vulcan. “Tuvok, if ordered by Cavit, would you have fired on my ship?”
Without hesitation he answered the question. “Yes Captain. If Mr. Cavit had ordered me to fire I would have done so.”
There were gasps of shock from the convicted four, plus the guards.
Once again Janeway turned to the screen. “Computer, on screen. Exhibit Six. The position of the Maquis ship on the day Cavit took Chakotay prisoner.”

    Mark 34.56.78

Since her head was slightly turned, only a few saw the smile on Captain Janeway’s face. “Computer, show Exhibit Six, the position of the Maquis ship and Exhibit Six-A underneath, the target destination of the torpedoes as inputted by Tuvok.”

    Mark 34.56.78
    Mark 33.58.80

Looking slightly amused, Kathryn turned back to the Vulcan. “It would appear, Mr. Tuvok, you require a remedial course in targeting practices.”
Even Tuvok appeared amused. “Yes Captain, logically it would appear so.”
Straight faced, Evans leaned slightly forward. “Perhaps Tuvok, we can practice on the Kazon when they next attack.”
Tuvok turned to the Maquis commander. “This Mr. Evans would be an excellent idea.”
Chakotay smiled. He was beginning to understand and like Vulcan subtle sense of humour. “Tuvok, if I had thought Cavit was bluffing, refusing to surrender my crew, and you had fired, Cavit would have arrested you when the torpedoes missed their mark.”
Tuvok explained Vulcan reasoning. “Threatening in order to achieve an arrest, and actually carrying out the threat, are two different situations. At this time, your weapons were off-line, your shields lowered. With the sensors damaged and not working, your ship was completely helpless. Boarding parties could have been sent over, the ship easily captured. If Mr. Cavit had ordered me to fire, it would have been mass murder. Sufficient cause for me to question his mental state, plus he would have been in violation of several Federation and Starfleet laws. I would then have adequate reason to remove him from duty. A situation which did not arise.”
Janeway looked over at Chakotay. “Because Chakotay took the only logical course of action.”
Slowly she picked up another padd. “I will forever be grateful to Chakotay, for having the foresight to download my logs. For it gave me a chance to see, not only your actions, but also those of the rest of my crew. I saw my crew standing side-by-side with the Maquis anxiously awaiting news of Chakotay. No one with phasers drawn. I saw my crew cheering with the Maquis when Chakotay announced he was safe and Tuvok had taken command of the Explorer. And afterwards I saw my crew, here on Voyager, making a captain proud. Computer, on screen Exhibit Seven. The mess hall on Voyager.”

The Maquis mess hall was full of Starfleet uniforms. Some were sitting, some were standing, some, such as Joe Carey, were staring out the windows. Suddenly, he turned and looked at his crewmates.
Carey: “I don’t know about you, however, I can’t just sit here and wait. Our ship has been destroyed, by our own first officer and doctor. We’re alive because Chakotay transported us out of there in time. And on top of this, after what Cavit tried to do, Chakotay risked his life in an attempt to save Captain Janeway. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m not even sure if Captain Janeway is still alive, hopefully she is and if so hopefully she’ll survive.”
Carey: “What will happen now…. I don’t know. Perhaps Commander Chakotay will allow us to stay on his ship, join his crew. After what happened it doesn’t matter if they’re Maquis and we’re Starfleet, not here in the Delta Quadrant. I for one would be proud to serve under him.”
Carey: “However, I do know this…. Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay were working together, I strongly believe she would want it to continue this way. This ship is short of crew, this ship has repairs which need to be done. If you want, stay here and wait, however, I know I can’t. I’m going to find engineering, offer them my help. We owe it to Chakotay, we owe it to Captain Janeway.”
Carey walked through the mess hall and out the door, the others started to follow. First by ones, then by twos, then the rest. A couple of yards down the corridor they ran into Javis, who immediately started to draw his phaser.
Javis: “Hey, where are you going?”
Joe Carey walked up to him.
Carey: “You can put the phaser away. We only want to help repair your ship. You need crew, well you got them. I was heading down to engineering. The others were going to different sections. This is your ship, tell us where our help is most needed. Where would an extra hand be appreciated?”
Looking at the group before him, Javis put his phaser away.
Javis: “Engineers, take the turbolift down to deck eleven, report to B’Elanna Torres. The others follow me.”

When the screen went blank no one spoke. All eyes shifted to Janeway. She spoke softly. “Yes, I am proud of my crew and feel honoured that, thanks to Chakotay, I will continue to be your captain. However, the actions of Mr. Carey had an unexpected result. Computer, Exhibit Eight. The scene outside the medical bay with Chakotay and Tuvok after transporting me onboard, coupled with the one on the bridge.”

Turning a corner Chakotay collided with a young woman in Starfleet uniform.
Young Woman: “Oh! I’m sorry Sir!”
Young Woman: “I was working on a conduit down the hall with Vorik. He asked me to take this to B’Elanna Torres and Joe Carey in engineering. Vorik went to work on the replicator in the mess hall. It didn’t know the difference between soup and flowers. How…. How’s the captain? Is there any news?”
Chakotay: “Captain Janeway is holding her own. The doctor is doing everything possible to save her. I’ll make an announcement as soon as I have some news.”
    Chakotay: “Lieutenant, what’s your name?”
Young Woman: “Nicoletti Sir, Susan Nicoletti!”
Chakotay: “Welcome aboard Susan Nicoletti. Tuvok, Evans, and myself will meet with everyone later on. Officially help you settle in, try to answer the questions you and the others must have. The important thing right now…. Captain Janeway is still alive, receiving the best of medical care.”
Chakotay: “Go ahead lieutenant, I’m sure they’re waiting for you in engineering.”
    Nicoletti: “Thank you Sir!”
In silence Chakotay and Tuvok continued to the turbolift.
Chakotay: “Deck One! Tuvok, where is the rest of your crew?”
Tuvok: “I believe Seska took them to the mess hall, until accommodations can be arranged. However, it would appear some, such as Lieutenants Nicoletti, Carey, Vorik are helping with repairs. Andrews, Durst are working with Hogan and Ayala. Therefore, Mr. Chakotay, I can not give you a precise answer.”
Chakotay walked onto the bridge. Evans rose from the command chair.
Chakotay: “Go with Tuvok, attend to the Starfleet crew. However, you might have to track them down.”
Seska walked over. “What do you mean ‘we might have to track them down’, they’re in the mess hall.”
Chakotay: “Are you sure? Tuvok and I ran into a Susan Nicoletti near the medical bay. She had been repairing a conduit and was on her way to engineering, where B’Elanna and Janeway’s engineer Joe Carey were waiting. Plus someone by the name of Vorik is working on a replicator in the mess hall.”
Evans to Tuvok: “A good crew do not need to wait for orders. They know what has to be done and they do it. Come on Mr. Tuvok, let’s track down your crew, or our new crew, and get them settled.”
Evans: “I think Chakotay would like to know who his new crew members are.”
Chakotay: “Today had been both unusual and weird. Even for the Maquis!”

By the time the screen went blank, everyone was laughing. The atmosphere in the holodeck a complete reversal, from the somber one just a few short minutes before. The story of Nicoletti’s first meeting with Chakotay had made the rounds of the crew, however, hearing about it then seeing the incident were totally different. Especially, as now they witnessed the confused expression on Chakotay and the terrified look on Susan’s face.
Janeway looked over at Chakotay, mischief dancing in her eyes. Yes, thanks to Chakotay not only will I be your co-captain, it will give me the opportunity to ensure he captains you well.”
Evans leaned forward, looking around Chakotay at Janeway. “I’m sure Chakotay will have to watch every order he gives, or have an irate Captain Kathryn Janeway after him.”
She tried to sound serious. “Mr. Evans and co-captain Chakotay….. You can bet on this!”
Janeway’s attempt to lighten the mood succeeded, she was aware the group of five needed to relax after the scare she had given them. Shifting her attention back to the five, she once again became serious. “The scenes I showed proved, beyond a doubt you broke very serious rules, regulations of the Federation and Starfleet. Rules and regulations which I hold dear, rules and regulations which I have governed my life by. However, the Federation whose laws you broke, does not accept murder, torture, or treachery. And neither do I.”
She took a deep breath. “Under the conditions which existed at the time, Cavit did have the right to assume command of the Explorer and break the treaty with Chakotay. Though by doing so he was going against my direct orders, plus his actions were premature, ill-advised. The intense hatred of the Maquis, by both Cavit and Fitzgerald made them unfit for duty. They had no right, to use the laws of the Federation to attempt torturing and killing Chakotay. Nor did they have the right to used these laws to plot the murder of all the Maquis.”
She looked at each and every one in the eye. “You broke the rules to save lives, they attempted to use the regulations to commit a horrific deed. Beyond a doubt you are guilty of having put an end to Cavit’s vile plans.”
She shrugged. “Your methods might have been a little unconventional, however, some have been known to say so too are mine.”
A small smile appeared on the faces of both Chakotay and Evans, however, they remained silent.
Janeway continued, though serious, there was a small smile on her face. “Everybody onboard this ship was aware of the true meaning behind this ‘hearing’. I made sure Evans informed the crew before you were ‘arrested’, plus everything transpiring here in the holodeck is being transmitted to every console on Voyager.”
In dismay Tom Paris looked at her. “Captain, you mean everything. The log records too?”
She nodded. “Absolutely! You may have escaped my justice, however, I would image your crewmates will make sure you pay well for your actions.”
Tom Paris uttered a groan, how soon would be be able to jump ship.
Kathryn Janeway once again grew serious. “Normally, the scenes which you saw, and will see, would never be shown to members of a crew. This was certainly not a normal situation. In fact, far from it. I discussed this with Captain Chakotay and Commander Evans, who agreed with me everyone deserved to know the facts. To know and understand the truth of what occurred onboard the Explorer. The rest of the crew has taken an oath of secrecy, now I ask you to do so also. Upon our return to the Alpha Quadrant, we do not know what the conditions will be. Hopefully, we will find the Federation as we know it. Depending on circumstances, I plan to discuss these events with Starfleet Command. Until I have given you the authorization to do so, the events onboard the Explorer are not be mentioned to anyone. Some of what happened, especially the log records which I am about to show you, can be a major cause of certain. Causing families great pain, inflaming others to violence, causing certain feelings and hatred to resurface. The subject of the events on the Explorer will have to be revealed carefully.”
Her blue eyes touched the face of each one. “Do I have your pledge of secrecy?”
All five answered in unison. “Yes Captain.”
She glanced over at Evans. “Before I show you the conversation between Cavit and Fitzgerald, there is something you need to know. Mr. Evans, would you please explain what you did onboard this ship before transporting over to the Explorer and surrendering to Cavit.”
Evans took a deep breath. “I locked out the computer with an encryption sequence, which even Tuvok would require days to break. Then I set the auto-destruct for twenty-four hours, silent count-down, no warning. Only Chakotay or myself could stop the countdown. This would give us time to escape and take over the Explorer, which did occur, however not as I expected.”
Though talking to Evans, Janeway watched the expressions on the faces of those before her. “Evans, if Voyager had been destroyed, the explosion could have damaged the Explorer, there may have been a Starfleet security detail onboard.”
Evans looked over at Janeway. “No Captain. I was planning to warn Tuvok, in just enough time to prevent any loss of live or damage to your ship. Neither Tuvok or Cavit would have enough time to stop the self-destruct.”
She looked at Tuvok. “I understand you, shall we say ‘guessed’ what Evans had planned. Computer, Exhibit Nine. The scene between Commanders Tuvok and Evans which took place in sickbay on the Explorer, after the rescue of Chakotay.”

Tuvok: “I suggest immediate cancellation of the self-destruct order.”
Evans: “How did you know? The countdown was silent with no warning. Even you could never override the computer lockout so quickly.”
Tuvok: “Under the circumstances it was the logical course of action, due to the information in your computer banks. Knowing it would be useless, I made no attempt to access the computer. Logically, you would have allowed sufficient time for an escape attempt and would notify me in time to remove any security detail onboard. While undercover on your your ship I learned, contrary to Starfleet opinion, you and Chakotay have a deep respect for the life of another. I also knew, even threats against your crew would not force you to discontinue the countdown. Since, the subject never arose in any conversations between Cavit and myself, I had no reason to inform Mr. Cavit, therefore waiting to see how the situation would develop.”
Chakotay: “Evans, how long was the countdown?”
    Evans: “Twenty-four hours.”
Chakotay: “It would appear Tuvok and Tom Paris not only saved my life but also the lives of both crews. If Cavit had transferred over to my ship, then destroyed the Explorer with the Maquis and Tuvok onboard, his treachery would have resulted in the death of the Starfleet crew.”

Speaking softly Janeway looked over at Chakotay. “It would appear Maquis Commander Evans was concerned about the safety of a Starfleet crew. Something two Starfleet officers disregarded. Computer, Exhibit Ten. The conversation between Captain Cavit and Dr. Fitzgerald in sickbay, on the day I started to regain consciousness.”

Sitting in his office Dr. Fitzgerald suddenly rose to his feet. Looking toward the treatment area he slapped his comm badge.
Fitzgerald: “Fitzgerald to Cavit. Come down to sickbay, we have a problem.”
    A few minutes later.
Cavit: “What’s the matter? What kind of problem?’
    Fitzgerald: “Janeway is regaining consciousness.”
Cavit: “What! You said she was dying!”
Fitzgerald: “According to the medical readouts, the possibility of her living, even coming out of the coma, were just about impossible. Not with her injuries. Either the instruments were damaged or she’s a lot stronger than the average person. With her injuries she should be dead.”
A low groan came from the other room.
Cavit: “We’re so close to getting rid of the Maquis. They’re all under guard, I have the hearing set up. Can you keep her sedated?”
Fitzgerald: “To do so would likely kill her. Evan if it doesn’t, right now, to force her back into a coma would probable result in irreversible brain damage.”
Cavit: “If you keep her sedated….. Look, once we inject Chakotay, we’ll have at least a couple of hours before he dies. I’m planning to send an engineering team over to fix the Maquis sensor system. That’s a Starfleet designed ship, the Maquis probably didn’t know what they were doing. Once Chakotay is dead, I’ll start the countdown to the warp-core accident, I’m almost finished setting up the instructions. We’ll transfer our crew, however, I’ll make sure we don’t have time to transport the Maquis down to the planet. I’m also going to make sure that pesky Tuvok and that convict Paris will also remain on board. All records of our actions will be destroyed. Will Janeway survive the transport over to the Maquis ship?”
Fitzgerald: “Doubtful! Even without being sedated her injuries are still extensive. Use of a transporter will kill her.”
Fitzgerald: “It’s her own fault. She made her choice by forming an alliance with these traitors. Let her die with them!”
The two men walked into the other room. Fitzgerald, picking up a hypospray, fitted a capsule into the instrument. They stopped beside the bed, one on each side.
    Janeway attempted to speak.
Cavit: I’m sorry captain. We have unfinished business with the Maquis.”
    Fitzgerald administered the sedative.

Tom Paris turned his head away. Tuvok stood with raised eyebrow. Harry, Telfer, Land stared in shocked silence at the blank screen. They had heard bits and pieces of the story, now the whole horrible truth, of what Cavit and Fitzgerald had attempted hit home.
Despite his Vulcan restraint, Tuvok felt stirrings of anger. Tom Paris slammed one fist into the palm of his other hand. Tears stung the eyes of Harry Kim as he looked over at his two captains. Shaken to his very core, Telfer pulled Lang into his arms. All over Voyager, regardless of their Maquis or Starfleet origins, the reaction of the crew was the same. Sick horror at what these two officers had planned. And gratitude toward the five who had put an end to these plans.
Now there was no question why, Kathryn Janeway had decided the five mutineers had earned special honors.
As Janeway turned to Chakotay, he placed his hand over hers. They had come so close to losing their lives. Now they had everything with this everything including a crew like none other. He gave her a nod and a smile.
After a moment to organize her thoughts, Janeway turned back to the little group before her. “The log segments, which I have been showing, revealed the extent of the courage you displayed during an unprecedented situation. They showed how you, working independently at the beginning then together, overcame your training to stop Cavit.”
Her hand moved to a small rectangular box. Placing it in front of her, she opened it to extract small off-white pieces of paper. Each rolled and tied with two ribbons, one read and black representing Starfleet, the other blue, the color of the Maquis. Each scroll bore, along its side in black lettering outlined in gold, the name of one of the five.
When Janeway and Chakotay rose to their feet, Evans also stood. The five snapped to attention as the two captains stepped down off the platform. Handing Chakotay a couple of the rolls, Janeway’s attention focused on those before her. “Chakotay and I have a small personal thank you, a small token of our appreciation.”
The two walked over to stand before Tom. She handed him one of the scrolls. “Tom, when you and I first met, neither had much use for the other. Upon arriving in the Delta Quadrant, my opinion quickly changed. I am proud to have you as part of my crew. I hope someday you will be just as proud to have me as your captain.”
For the first time in his life, Tom Paris didn’t know what to say. Then clutching the scroll, which was worth more than anyone would ever understand, he did something extremely rare for Tom Paris. He spoke from the heart. “Captain, my opinion changed the moment you allowed me to join the away team. Thank you, for giving be another chance. No one onboard Voyager is as proud as I am, to be part of your crew.”
He grinned at Chakotay. “She’ll make a good Maquis, this was some stunt.”
Looking at Kathryn Janeway, Chakotay smiled. “This is for sure!”
Kathryn held out her hand. “Thank you, Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris.”
With a deep smile Tom returned the handshake. A little while ago his world had turned black and cold, now it was bright and warm.
Chakotay held out his hand. “Welcome aboard. Thank you.”
Looking Chakotay in the eye, Tom Paris shook hands. He had come home.
Holding the scroll in both hands, Tom watched as they stepped over to Tuvok.
Chakotay handed the Vulcan one of the rolls. “Tuvok, it is an honor to have you, not only as member of our crew, but also as one of our main advisors. I hope someday you will consider me as a friend, as you do Captain Janeway.”
Tuvok looked at the man he had come to respect. “Sir, I am also gratified to serve in your crew. After the events which occurred, it would be acceptable to call you friend.”
His hand formed the Vulcan salute. “Live long and prosper friends Captains Janeway and Chakotay.”
Kathryn and Chakotay returned the gesture. “Live long and prosper friend Commander Tuvok.”
Moving over to Harry Kim, Janeway handed him his paper. “Not bad ensign, not bad at all. I’m looking forward to meeting your parents. I want to personally tell them what a courageous son they have.”
Kim felt a lump rise in his throat. Everything he had experienced this day, was worth it to hear his captain utter those words. Suddenly, everything became a blur to the young ensign. Chakotay removed something from the pocket on his shirt. Reaching up Janeway removed Harry’s rank bar. “I believe Lieutenant Kim you are not properly dressed.”
Reaching over Chakotay pinned the new bar in place. “Harry Kim, for your actions onboard the Explorer, for the help you rendered on Voyager, during a very unusual, difficult, and trying period, both Captain Janeway and myself promote you to the rank of Lieutenant. Congratulations!’
Janeway held out her hand. “Nice job Lieutenant.”
Complete stunned Harry accepted the hand.
Finally he found his voice. “Thank you, Captain.”
Chakotay grinned as he too shook hands. “I helped save your life, you paid me back ten-fold. Thank you Lieutenant Harry Kim. Not only for helping save my life, but also for your assistance during the battle with the Kazon and with repairs.”
Up until now, graduating from Starfleet Academy had been Harry Kim’s proudest moment. That was nothing compared to how he now felt. He had acted on instinct. An instinct, which had told him when to speak up and when to offer his help onboard an enemy ship. An instinct which had helped him earn the respect of all his fellow crewmates and his two captains.
Chakotay gave Kim a pat on the shoulder, as they moved onto Telfer and Lang. Handing the document to Lang, Kathryn gave her a warm smile. “I’m glad to see a little more color, you looked a little pale before.”
Embarrassed, Lang managed a small smile. Looking into the smiling face of her captain, the young woman suddenly realized the magnitude of her actions. She had never been sure if Starfleet had been the right decision. Now she felt a sense of belonging. “Thank you Captain.”
Chakotay held out the last of the scrolls to Telfer. “I had the opportunity of thanking both of you that day over on the Explorer, however, I’m glad Captain Janeway has granted me another opportunity to do so. Now I’ve seen exactly what took place, thank you. If you had hesitated, even for a few seconds, we might not be here today.”
As the two shook hands with Chakotay, Janeway became serious. “I never thought I would be grateful to have two mutineers in my crew, however, today I’m extremely grateful. You handed Tom Paris the phaser which saved Chakotay’s life. Something, none of us will ever forget.”
With a touch of mischief in her voice, she shook their hands. “It would appear, the two of you share more than being shipmates on Voyager. I hope things work out. Though I do share the ready room, if ever you need to talk with me, or need anything, there is an office available for privacy. You know where to find me.”
Telfer and Lang were both a little uneasy with the attention shown them by the captains. Onboard the Explorer, their duties had been minor security, never having direct contact with the captain. Suddenly, they had been thrust into the forefront of attention. Now Janeway and Chakotay had paid them the highest of honors. This was one day they would never forget.
Together the command team walked back to their seats. When they sat down, Evans resumed his seat. He could tell by the expressions on the faces before him, the presentations and words of their captains had a profound affect on each one.
Once again, Kathryn folded her hands before her, eyes dancing with devilry. “Before we end our little meeting, I want to thank Tom Paris for his advice. Tom as you can see I did speak to Chakotay, however, the next time, I do hope you’ll be more polite.”
Tom’s expression amused each and every one.
A thoroughly confused Paris looked at Janeway. “I’m sorry Captain. I really don’t understand.”
Kathryn Janeway smiled. “Don’t tell me you already forgot! Allow me to refresh your memory, by rerunning a segment. Computer, on screen, Exhibit Eleven.”

Kathryn Janeway was at her desk in the ready room talking with her father on the monitor.

When the screen went blank, all the crew, including the ones in the holodeck, were laughing at the embarrassment on Tom’s face.
Janeway looked at Tom. “Well Mr.Paris, as you can see I took your advice. And very sound advice it was.”
Tom Paris was concerned, in fact he was very concerned. He desperately wished he could remember what other log records Janeway had.
Tuvok turned to the anxious young man. “Mr. Paris, I would advise you to watch every move and everything you say from here on. You can never tell when it will come back to haunt you.”
He did not have to add, especially around Kathryn Janeway.
Paris looked helplessly at the command team. “I think I have just learned the word caution. I always thought I was good at blackmail.
Tom suddenly turned to the Vulcan. “You knew what the captain was up to.”
Tuvok looked offended. “Mr.Paris, I assure you, I was not enlightened as to Captain Janeway’s plans.”
Janeway laughed. “Tom, you have my word, Tuvok was not informed, however, I’m sure he realized what I had planned. Especially, as he helped my father engage in something similar against me.”
With a glint in his eye Tom Paris crossed his arms. “Now Captain, You owe it to us, we would love to hear the story.”
Evans, thinking about what she had put him through, leaned over in front of Chakotay. “Yes Captain. We would love to hear this story.”
Kathryn heaved a resigned sigh. “It happened almost two years ago. I had just returned from a two month research mission and was at home having supper. Dad contacted me, his manner unusually brisk, very admiral-like. I was told to report to his office the following morning.”
Throughout Voyager, no one spoke, no one moved. All knowing to be let into a captain’s life was a very rare, valued moment.
Thinking back to that time brought a small smile to her lips. “Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep. Right at oh-nine-hundred I arrived at his office, to be greeted by a very stern, frightening-looking admiral, plus a solemn faced Tuvok.”
She looked over at Chakotay. “There has been only two other occasions I have seen him so angry. Once, when Chakotay stole the plans for this ship. The second, when Chakotay escaped from prison.”
Chakotay decided silence would be best.
Laughing Kathryn continued. “Then both Dad and Tuvok dressed me down for several breaches of conduct. Little things, such as holding a cup of coffee at the wrong moment. The list seemed endless. I was shocked, the things they were objecting to did not make sense, I couldn’t understand what was going on.”
Remembering the day, a small, sad smile appeared on her face. “Dad said based on my actions and conduct, obviously I was no longer fit to be a captain. I was completely numb with disbelief. Then suddenly, before I could digest his words, Dad was standing before me. With a big smile on his face, he offered me the rank of admiral.”
She looked over the group still standing before her. “So…. As much as I would like to take all the credit, the idea for today came from Dad, not from me.”
Chakotay, leaning over, whispered loud enough for all to hear. “However….. The idea may have been your father’s, however, not the planning!”
Kathryn shrugged. “Ah…. You and Evans did help.”
For the first time Harry spoke up. “You didn’t accept the promotion. You remained a captain.”
Thinking back to those unhappy months, for a moment she hesitated. Did she want to reveal more of her private life? Then remembering this crew had helped to save her life, she replied to Harry’s question. “Yes and no. I am in the unusual position of carrying double ranks, only four in the whole history of Starfleet have ever done so. For official state functions, or other situations especially where security clearance is necessary, where the admiral rank would be more proper, such as high level meetings, I am Admiral Kathryn Janeway. However, I still captain a ship for exploratory and research missions, or when chasing Maquis outlaws. When Dad offered me the promotion things were not going well between my husband and myself. We had separated several months earlier, were planning to formally divorce. By offering me the possibility of remaining on earth, Dad was trying to give me the opportunity of saving the marriage.”
Sadness crept into her voice. “However, I knew there was no turning back. Even if Mark and I did agree to give it another try, I doubted we would succeed. I did give the promotion some thought, but in reality, sitting behind a desk was not what I wanted. I would never be truly happy. It would be unfair to Mark and to myself. When I discussed this with my father, he offered me the duel ranking. So far it has worked out well.”
Now laughing, she looked over at the man sitting beside her. “If I had become a full-time admiral, Chakotay would not have enjoyed his four months in a Federation prison.”
Pulling his ear lobe, Chakotay made a face. “This was a pleasure I could have forgone.”
He locked eyes with Kathryn. “However, dealing with you as a captain is hard enough, as an admiral…. I would prefer facing the Cardassians.”
She looked over at the group. “And now…. I think all of you had enough time off from your duties….. Your stations await you.”
Tuvok and the others started to turn away when Janeway stopped them. “Oh Mr. Paris, I believe B’Elanna Torres wants to see you in engineering. And she said not to keep her waiting.”
Tom let out a small groan. After what Torres had seen today, he could only guess what she would say. “Thank you Captain. I’ll head straight there.”
Baxter turned to Telfer. “How about joining us in the mess hall after shift.”
Telfer and Lang nodded, they were in trouble and knew it. This crew was not about to lose an opportunity at some good-nature teasing.
After the others had left, Chakotay grinned at his co-captain. “Computer, terminate ship wide communications, discontinue program.”
Immediately everything disappeared, leaving only the holodeck grid walls. Evans turned to Janeway and Chakotay. “I don’t think they’ll forget today. Going from a court martial to a hero in a matter of a couple of hours, is something not easily forgotten. Especially, as the whole crew was in on this little charade.”
Moving toward the door Kathryn smiled. “They deserved recognition for what they did. Plus, this crew had earned the right to see exactly the events on the Explorer.”
Chakotay nodded. “I totally agree. Those few days were trying on all of us, everyone had a lot to cope with. Yet despite all this, when necessary the crew came together. Without argument, without debate. We have a crew to be proud of.”
Evans shook his head. “Cavit and Fitzgerald were so full of hate, they never realized I would set the self-destruct. Plus the life of their captain meant nothing. They were ready to murder anyone who stood in their way.”
Walking out of the holodeck, heading to the turbolift, Kathryn replied. “Hatred…. What it does to people. If only some day, the word could be erased from all vocabularies, everywhere.”
Chakotay pressed the wall display calling for the turbolift. “Which reminds me. We have a situation requiring our attention.”
Stepping into the turbolift he gave directions. “Bridge. Chakotay to Neelix, please report to the ready room.”

Chapter 22

When Tom Paris entered engineering he knew he was in trouble.
Leaning against the console in front of the warp core, B’Elanna Torres stood arms crossed, one foot tapping the deck, waiting for him. “About time. Well flyboy…. What do you have to say for yourself? Letting everyone, including myself, believe you were both irresponsible and a traitor?’
Coming to a stop before the half-Klingon, Tom wasn’t sure of what to say. He was so used to negative opinions, he unsure how to handle this. He answered in his usual flippantly manner. “Well B’elanna, I had to keep up appearances. I had to defend my bad boy reputation.”
B’Elanna threw her hands up into the air. “I should ring your neck. Damn you Tom Paris, twice you saved this crew. I went over the time frame with Janeway and Chakotay, as to when you were captured. If the Starfleet patrol had found us, we would have been in deep trouble. They would have had enough time to call for backup, while we just sat there waiting to be sent to prison. Our whole navigation system shut down, causing both impulse and warp drive to go off-line. We were completely helpless!”
Stopping for a moment to catch her breath, she placed one hand on the console, the other on her hip. “Then you take a big chance disobeying Cavit, saving Chakotay’s life. Helping to save this crew!Flyboy….. I think your old reputation is pretty well down the drain.”
Tom was uncomfortable. “Living up to a bad reputation is easier than a good one.”
She laid a hand on his arm. “What did Janeway and Chakotay write?”
Carefully Tom removed the ribbons, unwinding the scroll. B’Elanna stood beside him as he read Janeway’s neat handwriting.

Delta Quadrant: Voyager - Stardate 48341
Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris, Chief Conn Pilot of Voyager
Tom, you made a liar out of me. Not too long ago I told my father, I would never want you as part of my crew. You changed my opinion. Not only do I and Chakotay want you as our pilot, we feel honoured to have you at the helm of Voyager.
Because of the actions you took, because of the decisions you made, not only do Chakotay and I owe you our lives, so too the entire crew.
From the moment of our arrival here in the Delta Quadrant, you became a responsible, respected officer. An officer any captain would be proud to have as a member of their crew.
Chakotay and I welcome you onboard and say thank you. Not only for your actions on the Explorer, but also for sacrificing yourself back in the Alpa Quadrant, allowing capture to save your crewmates.
From Chakotay and I: Thank you, Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris.
Signed: Captain Chakotay, Captain Kathryn Janeway - Command team of the Maquis ship Voyager

As Tom read the letter, gazing at the two handwritten signatures, the past slid away. No longer was he an outcast. Now, not only was he a respected member of a starship crew, he was their chief pilot. The man in charge of guiding the ship safely through unknown space. The duty did not rest lightly upon his shoulders, however, for once, Tom Paris welcomed the responsibility.
Slowly, reflecting on the sudden changes in his life, Tom rolled up the paper. Carefully replacing the two ribbons.
B’Elanna stood quietly, feeling the difference radiating from the person beside her. She spoke softly. “It appears Janeway did a good job destroying your old image.”
Tom uttered a deep uncertain sigh. “I only hope I can live up to the man she now thinks I am.”
Planting a light kiss on Tom’s cheek, B’Elanna smiled gently. “You will flyboy, you will.”
Tom turned to leave. “How about joining me for supper. Celebrate this new me.”
The chief engineer nodded. “Your quarters nineteen-hundred hours.”
She called after him. “And don’t be late. I hate to be kept waiting.”
Just before exiting, Tom turned with a wide grin. “How can I be late? It’s my own quarters.”
With this, Lieutenant Tom Paris left for the bridge and the waiting chair at his conn station.
While in a quiet corner of the cargo bay Telfer and Lang stared at the papers in their hand. Unaccustomed to all this attention, not to mention the scare they had received, caused a slight quiver to their hands as they open their scrolls.

Delta Quadrant: Voyager - Stardate 48341
    Lieutenant William Telfer, Security Officer
I never thought the day would come, when I would welcome a mutineer onboard my ship. Your courage saved not only myself, also this whole crew.
We have suggested to Commander Tuvok that you, along with Ensign Lang, be assigned to away missions, more important security duties. A recommendation which he accepted. You proved yourselves capable of handling difficult situations.
On board the Explorer you served your captain with distinction. I have no doubt you will continue serving the same way.
From Chakotay and myself: Thank you, Lieutenant William Telfer.
Signed: Captain Chakotay, Captain Kathryn Janeway - Command team of the Maquis ship Voyager

Slowly Telfer raised his eyes. “What does yours say?”
He looked over Lang’s shoulder as she began reading in a low voice.

Delta Quadrant: Voyager - Stardate 48341
    Ensign Jennifer Lang, Security Officer
No words will ever express the gratitude Chakotay and I feel. It took a lot of courage to act as you did onboard the Explorer. From the day you entered Starfleet, there is one rule topping all others. Always obey your captain, obey all rules and regulations, and never question or argue. This time, fortunately, you did not.
It is not often, one or two members of a crew can be singled out to be credited with saving, not only their captain’s life, but the life of every single member onboard.
Telfer opened the weapons locker, you handed Tom Paris the phaser which saved Chakotay’s life.
    Well done!
On behalf of Chakotay and myself: Thank you Ensign Jennifer Lang
Signed: Captain Chakotay, Captain Kathryn Janeway - Command team of the Maquis ship Voyager

Lang whispered in a voice full of emotion. “Captain Janeway wrote this herself, in her own hand, and they both added their personal signature. This was not computer generated.”
    “I know.” Telfer quietly replied.
Without another word, the two replaced their ribbons on the rolled up scrolls. They knew their lives would never be the same. Neither had considered their duties of any importance, in fact, the daily routine had actually been boring. Now it was different. Now they understood on a starship events and situations developed instantaneously. Now, no matter how insignificant their assignments might appear, they would always be watchful, always be ready. No matter what, their captains would always be able to depend on them.
For an instant they looked at each other, then together they left the cargo bay. After safely storing the scrolls in each of their quarters, they returned proudly to their stations.
Before returning to the bridge a shaken Harry Kim stopped by his quarters. His only wish had been to be a good Starfleet officer, making his parents proud. He had achieved his goal way above expectations, by doing the unthinkable, helping to save the lives of his captain and crewmates.
With the words of Janeway and Chakotay ringing in his ears, Harry sat down on his bed, carefully opening the paper.

Delta Quadrant: Voyager - Stardate 48341
Lieutenant Harry Kim, Chief of Operations
There are no words, which can ever express the gratitude, which Chakotay and I feel regarding your conduct onboard both the Explorer and Voyager.
Onboard Voyager, before you had fully recovered, you were willing to lend a hand, both during a battle and with repairs. You knew what had to be done and you did it.
On the Explorer you had the courage to speak up when you knew something was wrong. And your concern for Chakotay led to the discovery of a dreadful situation. A discovery, which was in time to save our lives.
When I was looking for a new ops officer, I almost passed you over due to inexperience. Going into the Badlands after Chakotay, I felt a seasoned officer at ops would be best. I was wrong, very wrong. You went from green to experienced and dependable in a matter of days, which definitely has to be a record. I have no doubts, you will continue to serve Chakotay and myself in a way which will do me proud.
On behalf of Chakotay and myself: Well done Lieutenant Harry Kim.
Signed: Captain Chakotay, Captain Kathryn Janeway - Command team of the Maquis ship Voyager

For several long minutes Harry sat quiet and still, reflecting on the past couple of weeks. That day on the Explorer, when speaking angrily at Tuvok, he had never thought about consequences. His thoughts had been on his Maquis friend B’Elanna Torres and the truce Janeway had with Chakotay, which had saved both his life and that of Torres’.
He did not really know Chakotay. Of course he had heard about the Maquis leader, just about everyone in the Federation knew the name of Chakotay. The Maquis commander which Starfleet considered an outlaw and traitor. Then the Caretaker had turned everything upside-down. Suddenly Harry Kim found his life being saved by this man, then just as suddenly he ended up helping to save Chakotay.
For Harry Kim, since arriving in the Delta Quadrant, there was no Maquis or Starfleet, just two ships from the Alpha Quadrant stranded all alone. During the battle with the Kazon ,he had not hesitated about going to the bridge, offering to help. He smiled at the recollection of Seska’s surprise face, when he had informed her, he was the operations chief on the Explorer, offering to help. After a moment the Bajorian had simply shrugged, pointing to the ops station.
He had followed his instinct and his sense of right and wrong. In doing so, he had won the respect of his captains. No young ensign from Starfleet Academy could wish for more. Standing up, he placed the scroll in a safe place. Then exiting his quarters, he left for his place on the bridge of Voyager.
Leaving the holodeck, Tuvok returned immediately to his station. He had been correct in assuming what Janeway had planned. After all, for Kathryn Janeway it was a logical course of action. He had intended to read his message from the Janeway and Chakotay in his quarters, at end of shift. After the two captains entered their ready room all was quiet on the bridge. Harry and Tom had not yet returned, the others were silently digesting the events of the day. Taking the paper from his pocket he carefully removed the ribbons.

Delta Quadrant: Voyager - Stardate 48341
    Commander Tuvok, Chief of Security
To one of my dearest friends thank you. There is not much else I can say, especially knowing how much you dislike displays of emotion. However, this time there is no way I and Chakotay can prevent our feelings from showing.
We are proud to be, not only your commanding officers, but also your friends. You have honoured my trust far above expectations, proving Vulcan principals and ethics far outweigh any uniform someone might be wearing.
From both Chakotay and myself thank you.
Live long and prosper, our friend Tuvok.
Signed: Captain Chakotay, Captain Kathryn Janeway - Command team of the Maquis ship Voyager

Slowly replacing the ribbons, Tuvok returned the scroll to his pocket. There was tenderness in his movements. Peacefulness in his face. The words of the two captains were acceptable, allowing him to feel content, comfortable with the conclusion of the unique events onboard the Explorer.
Returning his attention to the tactical panel, he looked up as Neelix, almost at a run, exited the turbolift.
The Talaxian rushed past. “Hello Mr. Vulcan. Wonderful thing you did on the Explorer. Sorry I can’t stay and talk. Captain Chakotay and Captain Janeway want to see me. Mustn’t keep them waiting. I’ve seen what the command team do to people they like, I don’t want to be on their bad side.”
Tuvok watched with raised eyebrow as Neelix pressed the ready room chime. Next minute he disappeared inside.

Chapter 23

Busy at their computers, both members of the command team responded to the ready room chime. “Enter.’
Chakotay threw Kathryn a wide grin. “See how well we work together.”
Kathryn threw her best death glare.
Silently laughing at his co-captain, Chakotay marvelled at how, in the short time Kathryn Janeway had been onboard, new words had been introduced. Such as the Janeway death glare and todays new word of Janewayed. At this rate, by the time they reached home, the whole crew would have a new vocabulary.
Entering the room Neelix, wringing his hands in his typical fashion, stopped just inside the door. “Captains, you wanted to see me?”
    Chakotay looked over at Kathryn.
She was sitting there with an elbow propped up on the armrest, a hand supporting her chin, with an expression upon her face which clearly said, ‘I’m not opening my mouth’.
Managing to keep his amusement out of his voice, Chakotay replied to the question. “Yes Neelix, please have a seat.”
Moving to the chairs in front of the desk, the Talaxian sat down. “That was a nice ‘trial’ we had today. At first, everyone except Tuvok appeared terrified. Do Vulcans ever change expressions?”
Folding her hands in her lap, Kathryn smiled. “Vulcan expressions are very subtle, difficult to read and understand. When you know, Tuvok as well as I do, you will be able to see the small facial changes.”
Neelix looked from one to the other. “Is there something I can help you with?”
Leaning forward, Chakotay turned his monitor toward the Talaxian. “Neelix, according to your records, this is one of the ships brought here by the Caretaker. Do you recognize it?”
From his perch on the edge of the chair Neelix moved his head closer, skewing up his eyes. “Yes, yes. One of the first ships brought here. About five, no I would say six, no seven months ago.”
He thought for a moment. “No, it was more like eight months. That’s right, the Caretaker started bringing ships here eight months ago. This was the second one.”
Kathryn, stretching out her arm toward the cup on her desk, asked hopefully. “Do you know what happened to the ship and crew?”
Neelix shook his head. “I’m afraid not. I never saw any of the crew and they left, with fewer crew members after the Caretaker released them. Unfortunately, most of the ships brought here were, like yours, badly damaged. Which made them easy prey for the Kazon and, especially, the Vidiians. Some Kazon have prisoners being used as slave labor, which are not species from around here.”
This time it was Kathryn, who turned her monitor. “Neelix, do you recognize this species?”
He peered closely at the screen. “Why yes! There are several being held by the Hobii sect. They appeared just a tough and nasty as the Kazon. I didn’t exactly feel sorry for them, except for the boy.”
Chakotay and Kathryn exchanged glances. She then asked. “The boy, could you tell how old he was? Or did you hear any of their names?”
Neelix shook his head. “I’m afraid not. I never had reason to speak to them, they were housed in an area on the far side of the main compound. As for the boy, didn’t get a good look at him, however, he was about this tall.”
He held up his hand at a height which would indicate a nine or ten year old humanoid child. “Do you know who they are?”
Before replaying Kathryn looked over at Chakotay, who gave a slight nod. “They’re Cardassian.”
Neelix immediately came to the most likely conclusion. “Cardassian! They’re your enemies. This is why you wanted to know what happened to their ship. Well I only saw about six or seven, there was no sigh of their ship. If they’re prisoners of the Kazon they will not cause you any trouble.”
Neither captain responded. Instead Kathryn asked the question of interest to both. “Neelix, among the various prisoners the Kazon are holding, or on some space station, did you see anybody wearing the uniform similar to the one I had?”
Neelix thought for a moment. “No. You mean other Starfleet people?”
    Janeway nodded.
The Talaxian shook his head. “I’m afraid not. Was there another Starfleet ship brought here?”
For a moment she stared at her monitor. “Yes. It was the Equinox under Captain Ransom.”
Chakotay turned to her in surprise. “Captain Rudolph Ransom the Third?”
Placing her cup on the desk, Kathryn tilted her head sideways. “Don’t tell me, you know him?”
Looking slightly guilty, Chakotay ran a hand through his hair. Well, sort of.”
She looked at him. “What does ‘well, sort of’ mean?
He had no choice but to explain, especially with his co-captain staring at him. “Just after taking command of the Maquis, I was on DS-3 with Evans and two others. I need to speak with an informant, but had made sure there were no Starfleet ships in the area. I left Evans and the other two eating at one of the food stalls, while I attended to business. When I returned there was a Starfleet captain in the process of taking them prisoners. By coming up from behind, I convinced him this was not a good idea. It turned out to be Ransom. He was not very happy, promising the next time we met, I would be on the other end of the phaser.”
Kathryn shook her head. “Chakotay, is there any trouble you didn’t get into?”
    He shrugged. “Guess not!”
She tried to look exasperated. “When we return home, I will certainly have my work cut out keeping you a free man.”
She turned her attention back to the Talaxian. “If Ransom or any of the Cardassians are still in the area, is there any way to locate them. What about supply stations or depots?”
Neelix’s eyes showed his sympathy. “There are not many places where strangers would be safe. However, next time we stop, I’ll make inquires. Captain, I don’t hold much hope, not in this sector of space. You and Captain Chakotay were lucky, the two of you apparently came through this better than anyone else.”
Kathryn rubbed a hand along her chin. “Could Ransom or other Cardassians be prisoners of the Kazon without your knowledge?”
He shook his head. “Anything is possible, however I doubt it. I made it my business to know what was going on with all the various sects. Knowing what they needed, or did not need, was the only way I could survive.”
Kathryn realized Neelix had a very hard life before Voyager. “Thanks for the information. We would appreciate it, if for the time being, you didn’t mention this conversation to anyone.”
Neelix bobbed his head up and down. “Of course Captain. I don’t suppose this crew would be very happy with Cardassians here in the Delta Quadrant.”
Leaning forward, Chakotay placed his arms on the desk. “One more thing Neelix. If it were necessary, would you be able to guide us to the place you saw the Cardassians.”
Neelix looked shocked and scared. “I suppose so. However Captain, they are in the heart of Kazon territory. It would be extremely dangerous. Plus their planet is difficult to approach with the only safe avenue heavily guarded.”
Chakotay nodded. “I understand. Thanks Neelix.”
The Talaxian stood up. “I’m sorry I couldn’t give you better information. From what I’ve learned, this crew came from a much more peaceful area. I’m sorry you ended up here.”
After Neelix left Kathryn, deep in thought, walked over to the replicator. Returning with two fresh coffees she sat down. Reaching over she handed Chakotay a cup. “You’re thinking about a rescue attempt.”
For a moment he did not reply. Placing the cup on his desk, Chakotay stared down into the steaming liquid. “I’m not sure.”
Resting his head against the back of the chair, he rubbed his hand along the armrest. “Though I have no love for Cardassians, and I know you don’t either, what Seska said is true. Not all Cardassians are bad or want to destroy the Federation.”
Kathryn smiled. “You went into my personal profile after bringing me onboard.”
    Chakotay looked apologetic.
She laughed. “It was the natural thing for a captain to do. I would have done the same.”
Her expression changed as she remembered events from twenty years ago. “Now you know I was captured by the Cardassians, held for a couple of days in one of their prisons. It happened just inside their territory while on some type of reconnaissance mission. I was serving under Captain Owen Paris, Tom’s father. An ensign fresh out of the Academy, on my first assignment. When the Federation Council signed the Peace Accord, I tried to put my experience behind me. It was difficult for both my father and myself to accept this alliance, however, both of us were bound to Federation laws.”
Picking up his cup, Chakotay looked over at his co-captain. “I read the official story, understanding what was between the lines. Knowing how Cardassians treat prisoners…..”
Kathryn ran a finger up and down her cup. I was lucky….. except for being terrified. Not so Owen Paris, he has never been the same. I’ll never forget his screams as they tortured him. I could hear, however, fortunately I could not see what they were doing. I was locked in a small cage in which it was impossible to stand up. All I could do was sit there, expecting any moment they would come for me. We were rescued by Starfleet special forces after two days, Two days too long.”
After a moment she continued. “I had almost no contact with Cardassians since then. When I do, it is a fight not to be rude or aim a phaser at them.”
Chakotay took a sip of coffee before resting the cup on the arm of the chair. “I understand, my feelings are the same. As difficult as it was, I was able to deal with, and even feel sympathy, for those working against the Cardassian government and this Dominion alliance. Even though this alliance was supposed to be secret, someone high up in the Obsidian Order did not agree with their government. He or she must have leaked the news causing resistance groups to form. I was dealing with the largest and best equipped.”
Leaning back, for several minutes Kathryn looked down, staring at nothing in particular. Looking up she locked eyes with Chakotay. “I don’t want to become another Cavit or Fitzgerald. So full of hate they were blind to everything else. We must put or personal feelings aside, judge each Cardassian by what they do, not who they are. What would we do if these were not Cardassians? If they were Vulcans or Bajorians.”
For a moment Chakotay remained silent. “We need some Vulcan logic. Evans, Tuvok, report to the ready room.”
Moments later the two entered, Evans taking his customary seat, Tuvok, as usual, standing.
Janeway looked over at Evans. “Mr. Evans, did you find it difficult keeping Chakotay out of trouble?”
Evans looked at the subject of her question. “Why, what did he get himself into this time?”
Chakotay shook his head. “You’re not going to believe this. There was another Starfleet ship brought into the Delta Quadrant. It was under the command of Captain Ransom, remember DS-3.”
“Oh!”. Trying to keep himself from laughing, Evans glanced over at Janeway.
Tuvok looked down at his crewmate. “I believe an explanation is in order.”
Glancing at Chakotay, Evans turned his attention to the Vulcan. “Once on DS-3, Chakotay was meeting with an informant, while myself and two of the crew ended up being captured by Ransom. Chakotay came along at just the right time, with the help of a phaser Ransom was convinced his actions were not acceptable. He was not too happy.”
Tuvok turned to Janeway. “Captain, I am unable to comprehend, why Mr. Chakotay’s ability at getting himself into trouble should surprise you. You and Captain Chakotay are of the same temperament. The difficulties Mr. Evans experienced, I also experienced in matters where you are involved.”
Both Evans and Chakotay allowed their amusement to show.
Kathryn, looking at the Vulcan, managed to keep her amusement out her voice. “Mr. Tuvok, I did not know Vulcans sought revenge. I’m sure this comment was in retaliation for today.”
Tuvok stood straight. “Captain, Vulcans do not engage in revenge. I was just stating the truth.”
Sitting there, trying to appear innocent, she made no reply.
Regaining his composure, Chakotay commented. “It would appear the past conduct of just about everyone on Voyager will come back to haunt them. However, it is not because of Ransom I called you in here. Evans, you are already aware of this, however, there are a couple of things Tuvok needs to know.”
He turned to his security chief. “Tuvok, I must apologize again. There are several important facts which you should have been informed of several days ago.”
“Apology accepted. You have been occupied with other matters.“ Tuvok looked from Chakotay to Janeway. His meaning fully understood.
Tilting her head slightly to the side, Kathryn refrained from retorting.
Chakotay gave his head a small shake. “This may be true and everything happened so fast….. However, I am captain and though important matters have kept me occupied there are certain facts, thought not of an urgent nature are significant, which you should have been acquainted with, since you are in charge of security.”
Playing with a padd on his desk Chakotay became quite serious. “First of all. Seska is not Bajorian, she’s Cardassian, sent to spy on myself and the Maquis.”
Tuvok raised an eyebrow. “Indeed. In the situation which we are now in, this could present a problem. May I inquire how you found out, she has been a member of your crew for some time.”
Picking up his coffee, Chakotay stared down into the liquid. “Since I knew Cardassia’s favorite method of infiltration, therefore, Evans and Ro Lauren did special security checks on as many Bajorians in the Maquis as possible. Especially, any who were onboard my ship or who would come into contact with sensitive information. I knew almost immediately and attempted to use her to send mis-information back to Cardassia. However, Seska did not cooperative. Anything she sent to Cardassia was unimportant or out-dated. The information I supplied her with never was transmitted.”
After pausing for another sip, Chakotay continued. “Though not widely known, there is a growing Cardassian resistance movement, so there was, is, a possibility Seska’s a member, or has some connection. We monitored her very carefully. Due to this, almost a year ago, we discovered Seska started sending information to Admiral Edward Janeway.”
    Tuvok raised both eyebrows.
Shifting in her seat Kathryn picked up the explanation. “It was because of this information, the Cardassian-Dominion alliance, my father decided to take action. Dad sent Jean-Luc Picard undercover, in an attempt to verify what was happening. I was given the assignment to capture Chakotay….. However, It was made very clear, Chakotay was to be taken alive, even if it meant allowing his escape. Since, I was returning to the Gamma Quadrant, Dad withheld many of these facts from me. I only found out the other day, during a meeting with Seska. Thinking I was aware of her contact with my father, Seska admitting to being his informant.”
“Interesting. It is illogical Seska would convey information to Starfleet not Cardassia.” Remarked Tuvok. Even Vulcans can be amused.
Leaning forward, Chakotay placed his cup on the desk. “Seska claims she no longer supports the Cardassian government. Her husband and son were evidently fleeing, trying to reach DS-9 when their ship disappeared. Believing the Maquis had destroyed the ship, upset, she began sending information to the admiral. Wanting us stopped, but not by Cardassia. Though some details did concern Maquis activity, mostly it was on the actions of the Cardassian government. However, it turned out the ship was brought here by the Caretaker.”
Placing her arms on the desk, Kathryn continued. “We just finished speaking to Neelix. There is a small group of Cardassians, being used as slave labor by the Hopii, a Kazon sect. One of the prisoners appears to be a boy around ten. However, we don’t know if Seska’s son was the only child on this ship.”
Tuvok turned to Chakotay. “Seska is aware of this.”
Kathryn shook her head. “Not yet. She is now knows the ship was brought here, nothing more.”
Cup in hand she leaned back. “We have a two-part problem. What to do about Seska and do we try a rescue. No one on Voyager likes Cardassians. However, there is a child involved. Cardassian or not, I don’t like the idea of leaving him with the Kazon.”
Playing with his cup, Chakotay added to the complexity of the problem. “We also have to consider who was on this ship. According to Seska they were part of the resistance. If so, they may be connected to the group I had been in contact with, they were organizing all the smaller resistance factions into one large movement. I was supposed to meet with the leader, when suddenly all contact stopped. I feared the Obsidian Order had discovered their identities, however, apparently they were brought here.”
Tuvok responded. “If this is the case, then a rescue may have to be considered.”
Evans looked at the other three. “If we are successful in a rescue, then what? Will we be able to verify who they are? Even if they are resistance, will they be safe on a Maquis ship and will we be safe? How many are we talking about?”
For a moment Chakotay considered the questions. “Neelix said he saw six or seven, however, there could be more. Rescue attempt or not, first of all Seska will have to admit who she is, reverting back to being Cardassian. I will not keep this crew in the dark.”
Remembering what happens when secrets are kept, he threw Kathryn a quick glance. “I do not want anyone on Voyager, to feel we are withholding things from them or lying. If we’re going to survive the trip back to the Alpha Quadrant, we must trust each other. Allowing Seska to remain….. We will have to make a decision independent of any rescue attempt. This situation will have to be resolved, since a rescue will then involve more than just Seska being on Voyager. The reaction of the crew will have a great impact on our decision. If this crew will not accept Seska….”
Evans nodded. “I’m in agreement there. However, we need more information. First, we have to determine if a rescue is possible. Plus, we need to know more about these Cardassians.”
After assessing the information, Tuvok voiced his opinion. “It is logical to have Seska admit who she is. This way the reaction of the crew can be monitored. It will be important to emphasize, she does not support the Cardassian government, never sending information back to Cardassia. As for a rescue….. Until we have more information on the other Cardassians, we cannot come to a logical decision.”
Kathryn looked at the other three. “We need to tread carefully. This could be an explosive and dangerous situation. I know, even if this was a Starfleet ship, of which I was captain, I would be very uneasy allowing a group of Cardassians onboard. As for Seska…… She has been a member of the crew for some time, doing nothing to betray the Maquis. Contacting my father has to be viewed with special consideration due to the circumstances.”
Tuvok looked from Janeway to Chakotay. “The acceptance of the Cartesians might depend on their attitudes. If they are resistance fighters, their acceptance of other species may differ considerably from the normal Cardassian manner. In this, Seska’s relationship with the crew would be a good starting point.”
Thinking about obtaining another coffee, Kathryn agreed. “Tuvok has a good point. Up until now Seska has fit in well with the crew. Is this an act, or her true Cardassian self, will her interaction with the crew remain the same? Evans, how do you feel?”
Evans required a moment before replying. “I don’t know. Up until now I have nothing against her, either as a friend or member of the crew. I stopped thinking of her as a Cardassian. Of course she doesn’t look Cardassian. This I believe is the main point. Even if her attitude remains the same, how will her appearance affect the crew?”
He shook his head. “I really can’t answer how I would feel seeing, speaking with a Cardassian or Cardassians every day. Would I be at ease or trust them….. Just don’t know. How about you?”
Slowly Kathryn shook her head from side-to-side. “Like you, I don’t know. However, not too long ago, I held an intense dislike of the Maquis. Then once I became acquainted with you well….”
Tuvok turned to Chakotay. “If the Cardassians remained onboard, we do not have the manpower or the resources to guard members of this crew. Either the Maquis from the Cardassians or vice versa. Having them onboard, could destabilize the balance we have attained.”
Chakotay rubbed the bridge of his nose with a finger. “I agree. I’m afraid this will be a very sensitive issue with everybody. Then we have the problem of Javis. Tuvok, this is something else you need to know. As you are aware, Javis has a deep hatred for Cardassians and Starfleet.”
He inclined his head in Kathryn’s direction. “Well…. Perhaps, not all of Starfleet. Javis is from a planet called Sarous, located in the Gamma Quadrant. The Cardassians and Founders massacred almost everyone, he was among a hand-full to escape. He witnessed the destruction of his village, watching a renegade Starfleet officer killing his family.”
For a moment the Vulcan stood with raised eyebrow. There were times even he could be surprised. However, to be both amused and surprised within a couple of minutes was unusual. “This explains his extreme feelings. If I had been aware of these facts, I may not have included him in the away team.”
He looked at Kathryn Janeway. “However, it was for the best.”
Chakotay laughed. “I understood why you suggested him, I knew he would not be a danger. However, due to the events which transpired, his intense dislike has been greatly reduced. If this change had not occurred, uniting the crews would have been difficult.”
Kathryn stood up. “Anyone for coffee. It would appear I need to sharpen my wits, as I am the subject for amusement.”
Trying to appear annoyed, she turned away heading for the replicator. Evans and Chakotay just grinned. They knew she enjoyed these sparing marches as much as they did. Returning to her seat, she sat back holding the cup in both hands. “It is fortunate that incident did occur. Since it gave me an opportunity to show Javis a different side of a Starfleet officer, gave him something to think about.”
Thoughtfully she drummed her fingers on the cup. “The problem is…. Not what Javis would do the Cardassians, but what would they do to him.”
Chakotay sighed “This is it in a nutshell.”
Evans turned to Tuvok. “Javis can identify several of the Cardassians and the Starfleet officer. However…. He is not the only one. In total we have close to thirty eyewitnesses. Fortunately, only Javis is onboard Voyager. The others are with the Maquis back home. We have another question. Should we, do we need, to keep Javis’ origins a secret here in the Delta Quadrant?”
Tuvok looked back at Chakotay. “I presume Javis is part of the proof you have against the Cardassians.”
Nodding, Chakotay turned to Evans. “Now Tuvok is in a position of trust, make sure he knows everything, down to the smallest detail.”
Evans smiled up at the Vulcan. “It will be a pleasure.”
Chakotay turned to Kathryn. “I assume you have been going through my log records. When you are not thinking up ways to torture the crew.”
For an instant a smile crossed her face, before her expression became grave. “Yes, and I didn’t like what I saw. I wish dad could see them. I presume this information is just a small part of the proof you have.”
Chakotay did not reply. His face spoke for him.
Tuvok centred his attention on Janeway and Chakotay. “Under these circumstances, I would advise against having Cardassians, including Seska, onboard. However, we cannot not leave them with the Kazon, if they are members of the resistance.”
Thoughtfully, Evans rubbed a hand along his leg. “I’m not sure if Javis is not already aware of Seska. Not long after she joined us, Javis came to me, asked if I was aware Seska was not who she said she was. When I answered yes, it appeared to satisfy him. He did not ask any questions, nor has he brought up the subject again.”
Janeway shifted to a more comfortable position. “You said Javis is highly emphatic. This might protect him. However…. I would prefer not to take the chance.”
Chakotay looked up at Tuvok. “Recommendations.”
Tuvok quickly replied. “We are badly lacking in information to properly address the problem. I would suggest speaking with Seska and Neelix. Obtain as many facts as possible as to who the Cardassians are and from Neelix details on these Kazon. After which we will be able to make logical decisions.”
Kathryn looked over at Evans, who replied to the silent question. “I agree with Tuvok.”
For a moment Chakotay thought over the situation. “I want both of you to speak with Neelix. Find out all you can about these Hobii, what lies between here and where the Cardassians are being held. Also try to ascertain if there is a planet or area where they would be safe. After you have all the details, if you think it is feasible, draw up a rescue plan. I’m still not certain if we’re going to attempt one, however, I want to be ready just in case.”
Evans stood up. “When do you want a preliminary assessment or plan?”
Janeway looked over at Chakotay. “What about tomorrow mid-morning, hold a senior staff meeting later. Even if we do not have a detailed rescue plan ready, at least we’ll know if one is possible. I think we should speak with Seska right away. Then we can discuss this during the evening, you and I need to be prepared for tomorrow. I have the feeling we’ll attempt a rescue. The biggest problem will be afterwards.”
Chakotay nodded. “Good idea. Evans will you tell Seska we want to see her.”
Evans nodded. “I’ll send her in right away.”
As the two exited the ready room, they left the command team in serious conversation.”
